How do schools have such different policies in reviewing grades? Does no organisation review this? Just spoken to a school who automatically review all exams within 3 marks of the boundary and pay for "remarks" if worth it on results day for all subjects. It is a normal comprehensive. Compare this with schools who still wont look at a script 10 days into the start of term despite charging students for the scripts on the first possible day.

It will depend on the budget. Some schools have money for it and some don’t.

School’s can access scripts FOC. Although simple it does take a little time so if a student requests a copy of their script there is often a charge per script and/or an admin fee. Depending on
the size of the school and if there is a 6th form, a 6 form entry school has potentially 5,000 scripts per summer. All of which could be requested.
In all cases, permission is required from students to access their scripts.

We have a deficit in the millions. Even if we wanted to, we couldn't afford to pay.

And if there was to be any regulation, it would be more likely to enforce schools NOT providing advice because the whole thing is become unsustainable for schools.

Plus the reviews are done by HOD or subject teachers on top of their other work at the start of the academic year when we are rather busy. We don't get paid to do this and in my subject it is 6 papers per student.

Under the common ground of JCQ regulation, schools operate review of marking under internal policy.

• review of marking requires students' consent

School fund or self fund depends on school budget. There is no rule. My experiences with review of marking is just about 20-30% successful rate for 1-2 marks gap under the grade boundary. Without relevant support by teachers to check the "likelihood" of succeed and 'develope strategy' of submission, it is a bit of waste of money.

In a state school, there are all "extra".

I mark 2 of the 4 papers in my subject, therefore 50% of the requests for script checking come to me. For free. Around the rest of my workload.

It can't be part of my job because the students are no longer off role. If push came to shove, I'd simply refuse to do it.

I feel demand seems to have gone up.
Too many wanting to take a punt on reviewing rather than because the grade given is genuinely off kilter for the student.

But for your own child I can see why parents want it.

For 3-4 borderline, or accessing next course offer it seems reasonable, but otherwise maybe we need more of a culture of acceptance.

(And then I read about English marks going up massively and think we'll I see why parents are doing it. . ..)
