Hi everyone, does anyone have any experience of this school? I am looking at it as an alternative to boarding at an independent school. More to it then cost but obviously the cost is substantially less - its just the cost of boarding. It seems quite a nurturing environment but would be great to hear anyone's experiences

If you want boarding experience it’s probably worth asking Mumsnet to move this thread to the boarding school area.

Have you managed a midweek visit yet rather than just an open day? With state boarding like DOY the house vibe and whether DC would actually like full boarding matters more than the prospectus polish.

I'd ask about class sizes, how mixed the year is academically (it's non-selective), weekend leave / exeats, and what the latest Ofsted and boarding inspection actually said. Also worth being clear whether you're comparing it to weekly boarding indies or full boarding — the day-to-day feels quite different. Cost is obviously a big pull but I'd still sit with current parents if you can find any, because the military-ethos bit is either a selling point or a hard no depending on the child.

Great school. Nowhere is perfect, but the staff are dedicated and support the students to reach their very best. Strong pastoral system and academic core, with a lovely heritage and military ethos. Has fantastic facilities and always trying to improve and update.
