Is it a bad idea to do both Economics and Business Studies A level?

DS wants to do both. He likes the subjects in both specs. Third subject would be Spanish and possibly also taking core maths. He wants to do Business / Management with Spanish at university and would be targeting RG but not the very top ones.

Is there too much overlap between the two and would this combination work against him for university applications?

My DH teaches both these and there are always a few students who do both. It’s absolutely fine, The really keen Economists usually do Maths as it’s important at uni level but it sounds as though your DS’s choices will be fine. To be pedantic it hasn’t been Business Studies for years now - it’s just Business!

Ds is doing both. Economics has more Maths content whilst Business covers things like Human Resources as well. He likes Economics and is planning to continue it at uni, but doesn't enjoy Business, so there obviously is a difference!

Sounds fine to me. I think LSE has a caveat against taking business and economics but if he is not aiming that high then I cannot see the issue. Might be worth checking the websites of possible unis or even emailing the admissions teams.

Great thank you for the responses so far. I have checked a few random uni courses and it doesn’t seem to be an issue. But yes good idea to email or do a bit more research.

The top three combinations with Economics A level amongst 18 year olds in this summer's exam cycle where: Maths (21,495), Business (9,080) and Psychology (6,490). As @clary says, only LSE explicitly cautions against the Econ-Business combo and Cambridge does not warm to Business A level.

80 18 years took Economics, Business and Spanish in June. There is a quantitative element to Economics but Core Maths could potentially provide really good support on the statistical side, which would also help at uni level even if maths-heavy economics degrees are precluded because of the absence of Maths A level.

DD took Business, economics and politics and got 5 offers from Newcastle Leeds York Sheffield and Liverpool to do an economics degree. So no, it won't hold him back, especially if he enjoys the subjects and so does well in them.

I'd take a look at the admissions requirements of what. might eventually become his top-choice universities. Often they will give an indication if the subjects are a strong choice.
