Any BTec level 2 (secondary) teachers who can help me understand this?

DC has just done Enterprise level 2 as part of their GCSE’s. He was predicted a D2 but got P2 final grade.
Marks were BEN01 45/90
BEN02 48/90
BEN03 87/120.
The first two were coursework assessed by a teacher then moderated.
Final one is an exam.
The exam mark is an M2. The coursework marks are barely a level 2 pass.
Im struggling to understand how / why his teacher predicted a D2 and how he got such positive feedback that he was doing really well throughout when in reality his coursework barely scraped a pass? He knew his coursework marks, I also remember he was told he didn’t need to resubmit.

Now I get that he gets the grades that the quality of his work deserves. But the feedback and predictions seem so far removed from his final grade and from what his coursework marks would suggest is even possible that I’m completely confused.
He’s also planning on doing level 3 business at 6th form which I’m now worried about!

Can anyone help explain what maybe was lost in communication here?

hi, not a teacher just a parent. Grade boundaries are here for btec https://qualifications.pearson.com/content/dam/pdf/Support/Grade-boundaries/btec-tech-awards/btec-grade-boundaries-l2-reformed-tech-awards-june-2026.pdf

3 things I can think of

  1. was it a typo and should they have put D1 as the predicted? Then a P2 would be higher. E.g predicted a level 1 distinction and got a level 2 pass which is higher or
  2. the teacher screwed up and some how mixed up the raw mark and the UMS score or
  3. something major happened in moderation

when did they predict the grades? Was it before any modules were completed or before moderation.

i agree it would be odd to predict a D2 if one or both of the non exam mark modules were known

Hi thanks for replying. I’ve looked at the grade boundaries already. That’s what’s shifted me from thinking oh no he didn’t do as well as predicted, it’s ok, to WTF?!
He was definitely predicted a D2. I have an email from his teacher where I clarified as he needed the info for his sixth form application. As I said, alk the way through he was told he was doing great. He got the bloody business prize in year 10!

I need to speak to someone about this. It’s really hard to know how to play it as I don’t want to upset or stress out DS. He’s got his place at 6th form thankfully as he passed all his GCSEs. But this seems like such a fuck up that I need to just get some sort of explanation.

OP I answered on your other thread. I think he was working to Distinction on level 1 but the exam may have brought that up to a L2 pass.

Hey. I know two threads is confusing but I wanted to spread the net wide!
As I said above, he was definitely predicted a d2 not a D1.

The coursework marks could have been moderated down. Btec marking is slightly complicated if the teacher doesn't have a very full grasp of how it works. If there isn't an experienced internal verifier they can get a false impression of how they are doing. The way the mark schemes work is that certain things must be included. The teacher may have thought something constituted inclusion when it actually wasn't. I have taught lots of btecs and have seen 2 examples of a big mess up where pupils were marked down. In both instances it happened at level 2 in a secondary school where the staff didn't know what they were doing.

Thanks for this. Can I assume that DS will have his original marks somewhere so I can compare?
I honestly don’t want him to see me making a big deal about it as he did really well yesterday and this could take the shine of it. I’ll ask him gently.
