I've just got the script back for my sons English language paper and it seems on one multiple choice paper he hasn't filled out a box but has put an x on the other side.
It looks like no marks have been awarded for this.
Would he get the marks if we put in for a re-mark?

We are! Lol! Omg! It's probably me with all my questions!
The language papers the teacher has said 3 marks on one paper and 4 on the other.

🤣

Phew! So if the teacher thinks there are 4 on one paper and you trust him, go for that one first. Don't do both at once in case one moves in each direction and you in the hook for £100 and no better off!

And do ignore the newspapers - the grade boundary for a 4 went up. Nothing at all to do with under marking and completely expected this year. But "nothing to see here" doesn't get clicks.

So could he in theory move up from just one paper?
I asked for an explanation on how it works with re-marking and think I just confused myself more! 😂
They mentioned I think comments are for ul3 but you were given l3

It is confusing! And the terminology doesn't help because no one can explain it easily either.

Papers aren't marked again from scratch. They are reviewed to check that the original marks are reasonable. So if I gave 1/4 and a more senior person thought it showed evidence of 4, that's clearly unreasonable. But 2 probably wouldn't be (it depends on the quality of what is written so it isn't as simple as being the next mark or whatever)

In theory, yes he could move up from one paper. Ot down. Or not.

Hope you don't mind my asking but are you a teacher?
Tbh I was inclined to agree with you. It was only after receiving the feedback from his head of literature that we even thought of having it re-marked.

Yes I was and now work for exam board

Thank you again for all your help. And this response I honestly was beginning to think perimenopause had robbed me of any intelligence left lol!
I did my gcse 25 odd years ago and I don't know if re-marking as a thing then.
My other child's English language was actually re-marked three years ago. It was actually school who wanted it and paid. I didn't see the script or anything.
Would that have been the same procedure?

Ah OK. Could i ask you, I think I've mentioned this elsewhere but my son's script marks are different to what is on his results sheet. Would there be any reason for this? Other than a error by school.

Yes completely the same process.

Re the script marks/results sheet discrepancy, call or email the exams office today and ask. They'll be able to clear it up.

Hi
Yes I have queried this.
But I think we'll do as you suggested re-mark one of the 2 and see what we get back. We should still have time to submit the other if needs be.

Jumping on this thread - my daughter was 4 marks off a 4 in English Language. Everything else was good, 5s and 6s but I wondered if there is more scope to go from a 3 to a 4 than, say an 8 to a 9 as it's a smaller percentage increase in marks or am I hugely overthinking this? It will affect her college even though she has other good results so we're all very stressed, we've put in the review request for both papers under the recommendation from school but also we really have nothing to lose (other than money). She got a late diagnosis of autism but too late for any access arrangements. I'm reading 13-15% chance with AQA. Any words of hope?

We’ve had three subjects back from AQA and they’ve all gone up a grade . English literature increased by 13 marks.

Did you get the scripts back via school? How many marks is she from the grade down?

I'm afraid you're overthinking it. The reviewers aren't looking for marks and they are bound by very strict rules about what can be changed.

But if the marks are unreasonable, they will be changed.

Sorry! 🤣 Yes we got the scripts back and head of english said there is scope for an increase. She's about 13 marks off the lower grade but it doesn't really matter because lower than a 4 doesn't get her into college, doesn't matter if its a 3 or a 2, she would have to resit and won't get to do A-levels.

Glad you saw I was joking!
I would honestly say you've got nothing to worry about. She's unlikely to go down a grade and from feedback you've got is likely to go up.
If she stays the same then so be it but at least you know you tried.
Has she got her place at college? I think you can do alternatives alongside the actual course

OP we have the same anomaly as your son and queried it with the exam officer who said it was correct but some uplift AQA did to standardise scores. Are you sure your son didn't get extra marks because he was ill on the day of the papers? We applied for extra consideration and the exam officer forwarded it to AQA. I think that may have been the uplift.

If you just send one paper off - there is less risk of the grade going down. On Mumsnet there have been some MASSIVE AQA English Lit uplifts (one got extra 30 marks and another got extra 13 marks!). Something went clearly wrong with AQA English Lit marking.

More than 2 decades in the classroom and I can tell you that even the best prepared student can do mad stuff in the heat of the moment.

I'm sure I'll ever recover from the level candidate who came out and blithely told me that he'd answered on a text he'd read rather than the one we'd studied because "I liked the question better, Miss."

Little sod had me on tenterhooks - still got his A (in the pre A* days)

I did this on my IB History HL exam some years ago. Our school did Europe as the regional study focus of the 2-year course, but I got to the exam, looked at that question option, and really didn't like it. By contrast, the question intended to be used by the students who had done the Americas as their regional study option was about Cuban-American relations. This just happened to be an intense nerdy interest of mine at the time and I had read a number of books about it on my own. It was like a whole beautiful outline just unfolded in my mind on a good way to address this question, while the Europe question would be a slog. So I picked the Cuba question and went for it.

In hindsight, this was absolutely mental and I don't think I fully appreciated at the time how mental it was. I never told my teacher what I did, or he probably would have killed me. But I enjoyed writing the essay and thought it stood well on its own, though as I was finishing I didn't really know if I had hit what they were looking for, since I was ad libbing it. The IB examiners must have liked it, though, because I got a 7. It was a calculated gamble but I knew if I wrote about the European question, it would have been really tepid. I'd do the same thing again! But I'd never tell the teacher.

For clarity the English paper uplifts with huge mark changes will be because the SPAG level has changed.
others more qualified than I can tell you but it’s 12 marks per level I think.

This happens every year but is not the norm, when you look at the data. people post about them as they are so unusual!

It's absolutely not 12 marks per level for SPAG.

There are 16 marks in total for SPAG on lang, and 4 in lit.

AGlessandahalf · 03/09/2026 08:26

oh yes. It’s the actual levels isn’t it.
brain rusted away over summer!!!
thank you

Just wondering what the outcome was for English Lang for OP.

I got a review of marking for English Lit and my daughter got 9 extra marks and went up a grade.

I'm now thinking about doing it for English Lang but I've not heard of as many increases in marks. She needs 6 more marks which isn't common. But for Literature I'm aware of others that have had big increases, including 15 extra marks for another person in my daughter's year. What is the issue with English Literature. Makes me wonder how many people would have had better marks but where families don't understand the review system or can't afford it.
