What coat, bag and shoes are Year 7 girls using?

My daughter is starting Year 7 in September and I’d love to know what most girls are actually using.

I’m looking for recommendations for a warm winter coat that fits comfortably over a blazer, school backpack/handbag that’s popular but practical and school shoes that are comfortable and last well.

I’ve noticed quite a lot of girls wearing North Face jackets, but I’m not sure if they’re still considered “in” or if that’s changing now. Are they still the go-to choice, or are most girls wearing something else?

I’d rather buy something she’ll actually be happy to wear than waste money on the wrong thing! What are the most common coat, bag and shoe choices at your children’s secondary schools?

My daughter’s about to go into year 7 too. Round here, the girls all seem to have plain black back packs. There’s a few large handbags but I’d try to avoid that. Loafers seem to be in for girls. I hadn’t considered coats. I was just going to hope her plain black long M&S puffer still fits.

It’s very much area dependent. What’s ‘in’ in one area maybe less popular in another.

Year 7 mum here. Black Nike puffa jacket, airforce 1 black trainers and black Nike/adidas/vans backpack.

Not year 7 but two dd's in high school. Dd1 (yr10) black cropped puffa jacket from New look, handbag also from new look, PE kit gets taken in a tote bag. Some flat black loafers for shoes.

Dd2 short black puffa jacket - from M&S - her choice. Black slightly chunky loafers, Clarks sale half way through the year as previous shoes were walked through. Black handbag from new look, with tote back for PE kit. Has decided for next year carrying two bags is too much of a faff and back to a black rucksack for year 9. She's chosen something from Amazon similar to what some of her friends have. But black Nike rucksack was standard for Y7.

I'd rather a long winter coat but the really don't want to lug it around school. A slightly shorter/lighter coat that they will actually wear is better than a practical coat that's going to be left in the house.

I got her a North Face puffer as it was on sale but now I’m thinking maybe I should return it and get a plain black puffer.

Is the NF puffa coloured? If so, I'd probably return but OTOH, she might like it for weekends?

When DDs started yr7, the school advised plain black for anything they didn't specify as uniform. Most teens and tweens lately are wearing black North Face puffas and carrying some basic black backpack.

I appreciate the lovely surprise factor of DGD opening the 'right' thing but I'd ask rather than trying to guess. Also, sometimes, it's better to let the school year start so that trends can emerge.

Black north face used to be the thing but dd has moved over to an puffa with a hood now think it’s Stradivarius. They all seem to have a longchamp pilage and they all wear the same shoes too… the kickers that look like patent trainers when ever her friends come round there are a pile of identical shoes and bags in the hall.
Dd is Y10 but all the year 7s seem to copy what the older girls wear.

OP, does she need new stuff? Can you wait and see what she needs once she's started? Do her school shoes still fit? My DD wears black leather converse shoes and almost never wears a coat. She has a fjallraven back pack she bought second hand for a tenner half way through year 7. Vinted is definitely your friend. It would be a shame for you to buy stuff and then in week three of school her decide she would desperately like something else, if she likes to follow a trend. Mine likes things her friends like except when she doesn't and is very unpredictable in terms of what she likes. She is especially excited about secondhand stuff and I let her lead. Saves me a job.

She currently wears trainers to school so she will definitely need a pair of school shoes for secondary.

She doesn’t really follow trends but I wanted to make sure she doesn’t look like the odd one out in year 7

Has she got a transition day. Can you ask her to look at what yr8/9 are wearing.
Dd1 (year 10) all black nike backpacks, AF1/Kickers.
The school across the road is all le pliage/tote handbags and loafers.
Black puffas are ubiquitous although tbh dd1 rarely wears a coat even in the worst weather. Use of an umbrella was a breakthrough!
