Is two terms of English Language in Years 10 and 11 enough

DD is in year 10 and I was looking at the program for year 10 and 11 and they only have 2 terms for English Language. Why is the reason for it? Is this enough ? The rest of the term seems to be English Literature

The exam board is AQA

Are there any good resources which provide short revision per day?

How are there 4 terms? Or does it just go to Easter and they are half terms?

It's a strange way of organising it. Perhaps for Eng language papers they learn some of the skills required during the learning for the lit texts. To be fair, there is a lot more to learn to for lit papers but it seems a large gap between Paper 1 and the actual exam. Most schools do a bot of Eng lang along the way rather than dedicating a whole term to it.

AQA English Language is not easy. Loads of resources to support her though. The CGP books go through the papers in a structured way, and include sample questions and answers. Lots of students use Mr Bruff’s videos on YouTube to help them revise.

I don’t think is a full term each topic though( they also break for holidays every 8 weeks.

Won’t they do the paper throughout the year. It would be odd to do English Lang for the first x weeks of year 10/11 and then never again

Loveisintheairandallaround · Today 08:40

Thanks; not sure why the school isn’t spending more time on it though if it is so important.

I will message the teacher on Monday

But do you know they are doing it blocks like you think or are you assuming.

This was shared by the teacher to another parent who shared in whatsapp and it certainly agrees with what is happening this year. They had first mock on English Language, then My name is Leon, now working on McBeth until Mock next week and then Power and Conflict for the rest of the year.

I think what you need to bear in mind is that if they do more English language, they will need to do less English literature. Can't just do more of everything. They have probably been teaching this for a long time and know the best balance even if an ideal world they had more time on everything. To be fair there is not much content to learn for Eng lang, it's more about skills and if you read a lot anyway, you will be ok.

Pieceofpurplesky · Today 11:41

How many sessions of English? Macbeth will be a whole term and not half - as will J&H. As long as they are revisiting in the year it will be fine - the essay writing skills are transferable

Most schools will be hoping to have all subjects curriculum taught by Christmas of y11 then full revision to Easter and beyond. They'll be teaching every day for all of y10 and up to Christmas of y11 then recapping after that.

What else do you think they're doing in summer term y10?

Edited to add English Lit and Lang are 2 separate GCSEs so will have almost double timetabling compared to say Geography or French.

Loveisintheairandallaround · Today 11:59

5 sessions of English per week

English teacher daughter says the 2 subjects run concurrently - everything they learn in English literature contributes to English language. In English Lit they have to learn and remember quotes, understand texts etc so they spend more time - but if they pay attention in Lit classes they should have the skills to pass Language. She says schools don't explain this to parents which is why there is legitimate concern.

Dearover · Today 13:53

The skills they learn in lit enhance their language skills. Critical thinking, evaluation, SPAG etc

Loveisintheairandallaround · Today 15:37

Yes, that is true
