He won't fail. Schools are obliged to offer the opportunity and if a student misses the trip they should help them understand what happened on the trip. If it's aqa then the school should offer 2 opportunities one physical and one human, so he will likely get another chance....not sure about other exam boards. He can use other people's data in the follow up lessons.

He won't fail because of missing the trip. Contact school let them know he can't attend and they will deal with the rest

As others have said, schools only have to offer the opportunity to go. It might make paper 3 harder, but he won’t fail.

This is for Paper 3 fieldwork which is based on a prerelease and a lot of students find this paper easiest. Saying this as literally sat with sister who is a Geography teacher. If you know where the trip is and can take him there over summer so he is familiar with what the class did he may find that helpful. Other than that sister usually gives students who have missed out copies of the prep booklet before hand and a complete booklet with all the tasks they did when back at school. Wishing your son a speedy recovery 🌟
