Sixth forms in South or Central London that offer A Level German?

I'm looking for state schools that offer German A level as considering a move from private school
So far I have got Esher College, Harris Westminster and Graveney

I saw that the London Oratory offer German but we aren't Catholic and their admissions deadline was last week

Any other suggestions please?

oooh no help sorry but great to hear of someone wanting to do A level German – secretly my fave!

Sadly it is falling rapidly out of favour - in DS2's A level year (2021) his was the only post-16 setting out of about seven in our city offering it.

Hope you have success.

Grey Coat Hospital offer this. If DC is a boy he'd be in a small minority though.

As well as Grey Coats, St Mary Mags in Islington I think

How many boys to GCH admit each year do you think? The only thing I found suggested 1.5%

Esher applications closed late Sept so that's off the list
St Mary Mags does offer German but I think the commute will be too far

Looks like they currently have 17 boys on roll across Y12 and 13 according to DoE website (so could be a year out of date). It'll vary I guess a little year to year depending on how many internal applicants they have who want to stay and meet the entry requirements.

Kingsdale do, small sixth form though.

Is it? I ask because we are considering it and I know the school itself is huge. (Not to do German, though.)

Waldegrave, maybe Teddington, Chiswick, Hinchley Wood, Graveney are a few. I’ve just typed ‘secondary schools’ into Google maps and pulled up their sixth form prospectus which lists the subjects. How far do you want to travel?

Roomgigi · 14/11/2025 20:00

Ideally max 30-45 mins travel

324 in the sixth form 2024 / 2025. (Way fewer than at our DSs' old school, which has a PAN of 180 for year 7 but goes up to 200+ at year 12 - and yes, offers German A level, but too far from south London to be of use, Im afraid).

Sydenham and Forest Hill offers German

clary · 14/11/2025 20:07

I wouldn't call 324 in sixth form, even across two years, small tbh.

My DC's school which has about 220 in a year in KS3 and 4 had about 120 or so in each year of sixth form. 160 in a year is fine surely.

sailingsunshine · 14/11/2025 20:35

Yes Esher college applications have closed for 2026 entry. The German A level applicants mainly come from the German school in Ham.

Dinnerplease · 14/11/2025 21:01

SFH6 might be a good shout depending on where you live. Very easy on the overground and the 6th form is across both the boys' and girls' schools.

Orleans Park in Twickenham. Have you contacted the Goethe-Institute? They have a list.

mamagogo1 · 14/11/2025 23:10

@clary

i think that’s tiny, my DDs 6th form was 3000 students all a levels or IB! She did German but teacher left half way through first year so she dropped it after as level getting only a d

MN needs a 😮reaction! 3000 students blimey. That's bigger than the biggest secondary school in my county or the biggest in the next county as well.

Bufftailed · 14/11/2025 23:36

Chis and Sid, Bexley IB maybe some of the other grammars. If you are ok to travel

Roomgigi · 15/11/2025 14:44

Thanks for the suggestions
