Scottish Nat 5 biology - crisis help!

Hello! My son sat his biology assignment today, with two class periods given over to writing up an assignment that is worth 20% of his final grade.

And it did not go well!

He was confident the first part yesterday was fine and he reckons that was around 60% of assignment. Today he said he went to pieces. Was nervous, hands shaking and cut something accidentally when ‘cutting a graph out.’ Said he forgot key phrases, put numbers in wrong places and is now absolutely catastrophising. He has been averaging upwards of 75/80% in class exams across S3 and early months of S4 but is now devastated and thinks he has messed up so badly that final exam is redundant.

I have, of course, explained that there is 80% up for grabs and it is also highly unlikely that he has scored nothing at all in the assignment. He is absolutely in bits and nothing I am saying is going in. His confidence I think has been shot by sitting a paper in exam conditions and having a disaster.

I have suggested speaking to his class teacher however he is very resistant. Says it won’t make a difference. I know they cannot advise on outcome but just wondered if she might be able to put his mind at ease a little.
