Anybody have any ideas for a dc that is fine with the hiking part of the expeditions but really doesn’t enjoy water sports or axe throwing which seems to be what most of the residential are.

My friend's daughter helped to paint a youth hostel type place (think YHA) and stayed there, there was a group of them.

Thank you I just had a look and it looks great but they are 18+

Riding?

NCS?

EBearhug · 06/09/2025 20:43

One of my friends did something with the National Trust - an Acorn camp. Don't know if they still do it. I did it with an open air museum as a costumed demonstrator. I also did Raleigh International, and a lot of people on that were using it for DofE.

You do habmve to be 18 for a lot of options though.

Helping at a scout/guide camp? May be possible to be part of catering team or arts and craft instead of outdoors.

Kaggi9 · 06/09/2025 21:48

Do they play a musical instrument? They can do a music course like the Army Music Summer Academy.

Br1ll1ant · 06/09/2025 21:53

There are drama and cookery courses, as well as music. They’re often pricey though

School field trip?

cestlavielife · 06/09/2025 21:59

What are his likes ? Chess? Computer? Canoe? There will be a residential course in everything

Whereohwhereohwhere · 06/09/2025 22:02

My daughter did a week summer school at a uni. It was what she wanted to go onto study and counted as her residential. It was also fairly reasonably priced.

PiggyPokkyFool · 06/09/2025 22:12

Sorry - I'm obviously out of date as both of my DC used that for their residentials 4 and 2 years ago.
Thanks for the information.

SpiralSpiritSocks · 06/09/2025 22:22

There are loads of suggestions online.

DC I know did Field Studies courses, creative writing courses, music camps, Environmental camps, cookery courses and design courses.

I also know of kids who have volunteered at Zoos, on children’s holiday camps and with the YHA.

To be honest though the whole point of DofE, particularly at gold is that they do the research themselves.

School field trip?

School trips don’t count as you have to go with people you don’t know.

Talipesmum · 06/09/2025 22:34

We had a friend from overseas staying with us after she’d spent time on a farm with this collective: https://org.wwoof.uk/gap-year-and-dofe/

It’s an international organic farm type volunteering thing. I haven’t looked at it properly but was thinking it might work for dofe residential - this link suggests it’s worth checking out.

Roughly where are you based or how far are you prepared to travel? And budget? If you look on the DofE website there are lots of options.
