Tell me your review of marking increase….

We have a GCSE paper
for review of marking! We need 6 marks for next grade in English Language which seems a lot but our head of English advised for paper 2 to be submitted.

Just wondered how many marks have papers gone up in the past and reason why - was it a missed question, miscalculation or harsh marking etc?
Thanks

Everything from 0 marks to 43 across an A level. I think the biggest paper increase was about 25 on gcse lit 2. Usually it’s 0-4

I have never had anything go down but it’s possible

SwayingInTime · 28/08/2025 07:30

22 marks on one A Level paper last year!

Also 4 separate GCSEs up a grade but they were all borderline (one went up based on routine external moderation of coursework).

That crazy. Did they miss a page or did the wrong level get applied to the GCSE one? They must've gone up a few grades!

DS went up 6 marks on his psychology A level paper. We reviewed the papers before hand and he had been awarded the marks for the correct answer but they hadn’t been added onto the total number of marks.

HostaCentral · 28/08/2025 11:08

6 various GCSE papers all needing one or two marks. None went up or down. Cost me a fortune but did it for DD as she was disappointed in her marks. Hey ho.

We need 6 marks for an increase in Lang and 3 in Lit.

Lang is weird as DD basically got a 3 in paper 1 (much preferred this paper) and a 6 in paper 2 (really disliked that exam) so bit confusing.

Lit there is only 4% difference, but feels a bit low overall.

There is lots of chat about review of marking on the GCSEs threads but I am interested specifically in anyone who is reviewing English (Lang or Lit) a...

I'm an English teacher and every year we put a good quarter of our grades in for remark. Circa 1/3 go up. We've never had one go down. Marking is enormously subjective at GCSE and some examiners are poor. Good luck to your child :)

My DS went down 6 marks in geography CGSE. He was 2 off a 7 and had consistently scored highly in tests and coursework so we were quite confident/hopeful they’d find an extra few marks. In the end we were lucky he didn’t drop a grade. I stupidly didn’t get the paper to review. Lesson learned!

Sorry to hear. Is that this year?

they added about 10 marks per question. It was shocking but totally not at the same time.

last year I had a student who had a not attempted for one question but turned out It had been lost or similar. They found and marked it so she went from from 7 to 9 - she got full marks

Ah so they must've put them on the wrong level for each question. That's crazy. What grade did they move from, to?

My DC went up over 20 marks in R/S GCSE last year. Multiple questions were upgraded. Went from a low 8 to a high 9. Others in the class had similar. Both short answers worth a couple of marks and essays worth lots went up. The mark scheme was misapplied consistently.

Tge teacher thought it was odd as the rank order of results was totally wrong - weak students getting 9s (obviously those weren’t reviewed) and strong students who were on for 9s getting 6-8s.
Bloody depressing! Esp when you think how many wrong marks are never challenged.

This is super common with English too apparently. Lots of upside down grades- previously low achievers getting high grades and high achievers getting low. It's really shocking how bad marking is.

@WombatChocolate Wow, that’s a huge amount!!
Our head of English recommended we submit paper 2 Eng Language for review of marking. It’s 6 marks off the next grade which seems a lot. Waiting to hear back.

I wonder how the marking levels work, how many marks can each level jump?

Hi, did you get good news on your marking review?

Mamadothehump · 23/09/2025 03:47

DS’s school paid for the remark of English language as he was so close to moving up a grade. Came back as exactly the same marks.

anonymous56789 · 23/09/2025 23:16

We got son's physics GCSE remarks back today - gained 9 points across two papers. He had got 8s and 9s on all mocks and 6 on results day so it didn't seem right and has now gone up to a 7 at least - shocked that all those points had been lost! I wonder if assessors get told that they've made mistakes?

Which exam board was it? We looked at my DS’s physics as he did much worse than expected on one paper, the teacher felt he had been under marked, but he needed 10 marks to go up, and as the teacher felt there were 7 marks missed we decided not to risk it. I was surprised a science could be so far off.

It was AQA...

Eccle80 · 25/09/2025 15:16

His was AQA as well.

Stillwearingskinnies · 25/09/2025 16:46

My son gained 3 marks on his physics gcse paper and went from an 8 to a 9. We're still waiting for a remark on music (both AQA)

Hi, did you get good news on your marking review?

Yes!!! We received 3 extra marks in each paper taking it to a grade up! We gained exactly the 6 marks we needed!! Very happy DC
we are happy but annoyed that it wasn’t marked correctly in the first place.
