My daughter and I are wanting to relocate to Alton to be closer to family.
Yr 8 intake
I want to find a school that is inclusive and has a good recycling ethos, including pre-loved uniforms.
Clubs such as forest school, gardening, art or other creative activities would be welcome.
Thanks

They are all very good schools with lots going on. Perins tends to take from villages from Four Marks to Alresford and then surrounding Alresford, where as Eggars and Amery tend to mainly take from around Alton and other villages. My daughter is at Amery and we’re happy with it and she is also happy but she also has friends at both Eggars and Perins who are also happy with their schools. She wanders into town to meet her friends and also gets the bus to Basingstoke. We are very fortunate here to have choice of excellent schools, so I’d arrange to visit and see what would suit your daughter. There’s lots going on at all of them. Amery was full at one point and may still be, so you may want to check there’s actually space first.

I read recently that Amery was oversubscribed this year because of the closure of the local private school last year. All are good schools, I have had friends with DCs go through all of them.

Do all three schools have a space in year 8?

YourRealNavyCat · 06/06/2025 08:19

Thanks so much. Yes Amery is full. Eggars has space. My adult son is checking out the schools while I'm working in Brighton.
We're originally from South Africa.
Maia is into forest school and animals nature and art. She attended forest club at her current school.
The schools haven't finalised their activities for the new year. Eggars and Perins have forest school but it's used as assistence for SENS. Doesn't look like its offered as a weekly extra mural.
Does anyone know perhaps more about the forest school clubs are offer here?

Where do children from Alton go to for 6th form?

if your DD is still into animals at that age then Sparsholt College could be good.

I haven't heard of secondary schools offering 'Forest School', I've only heard of it as a Primary or Nursery thing as a general offer.

TeenToTwenties · 06/06/2025 11:16

You could look up the Hampshire and IOW Wildlife Trust as they run weekend activities for youngsters that could be of interest.

Ionacat · 06/06/2025 15:54

I don’t know any forest schools serving secondary aged pupils locally, the closest you’d probably get is Scouts/Guides who will do elements of that as they certainly do trails, campfires etc. It might be worth investigating as they’d be good to help her settle in.

Sixth form wise round here, it’s a bit of a mix. There’s Alton College which is owned by South Downs, lots go to Peter Symonds, then a few to Queen Mary’s in Basingstoke or Farnham. Sparsholt is a bit of a drive - other side of Winchester.

TeenToTwenties · 06/06/2025 16:11

@Ionacat Just checked, the Sparsholt college bus from Alton leaves at 8.10 at the moment which isn't too bad if that was where a desired course is.

Alton College is going down the pan at the moment, redundancies, strike action, head leaving, most A level students seem to go to Peter Symonds from Alton now. Some go as far as Godalming or Farnborough. Big technical colleges in Basingstoke and Farnborough as well as the 6th form ones.
