Hi all
I really need urgent advice on how to prepare your child for in year entrance test for grammar school (when this rare vacancies arise)? You can consider this as 13+ as well because this is for year 8 or 9.
what books I should use for English for comprehension practice?
How should i prepare for creative writing?
What kind of questions they ask?
Pearson or any other publications?
What maths book should i use?

If anyone has done this preparation for their child please share your tips and experiences. I highly appreciate your help.
Thank you

You would probably be best asking the school in question what exams they set for in-year places.

Or giving name of school here for those with direct experience. There is no one-size fits all.

You may well find that there is also a waiting list, so worth asking about numbers on that and potential scores needed.

So many Grammar.schools have totally different tests from each other or are set by different exam boards. You'll need to be specific about which school to get accurate answers.

DD sat an in-year entrance test consisting of maths, English and science papers in the summer term of year 7. We looked at the 'curriculum' section on the school's website and compared that to what she had had already covered at her current school. Then she used BBC Bitesizre to look at things which she hadn't done. This worked quite well (she got a place, anyway). Apparently her English paper really impressed, although there was one question on the maths one that she attempted despite not really having a clue about the topic, (we joked at the time that they probably marked her answer up for its entertainment value).

@MarchingFrogs which school your child gave entrance and got place? What was asked in english paper comprehension or creative writing?
Also you mention to look at school curriculum on website so once we know which books are good for practice english comprehension or for past entrance papers apart from bbc bitsize?

This was Southend High School for Girls; it was 12 years ago and I'm afraid that if DD ever did mention the content of the Englisjh paper, I have long since forgotten.

She only looked at BBC Bitesize, no books.
