New to the UK; needing advice on looking for a rental property + school

Hi,
I'm moving temporarily to the UK for a year-long attachment, and am quite confused about the process of finding a place and then registering your kid for state school.
Do we need to move into a rental property first and then apply through the city council? What happens if our allocated school is too far away from our home due to it being oversubscribed?
How does this all work? Would you choose the school first then zero in on the surrounding residences to rent? But this doesn't make sense either as the listings might not be available near your desired school.

Also, apparently I am late to this seeing that registrations have already come and gone? My child will start Year 7 in the coming academic year.

Would appreciate if anyone can give me a 101 on all of this.
Thank you so much!

Hi
I actually do this for a living so feel free to ask any questions
You need to get a property first
Getting a rental here is not easy in most areas. there is a lot of competition and it can be a difficult process
Once you get a rental secured and have an address you can contact the Local education Authority and apply for school places. You have missed the applications for this September so it will be an in year application.
You will get a place but it will be in a school where there is room
It may not be your closest school or one you would necessarily choose

Is your employer relocating you? That is the position of most of my clients and the employer pays for my assistance

Thanks for replying! ah no, it's a tight budget so everything is in the relocation package !

Whereabouts are you looking to live, and for what budget?

If you feel comfortable sharing which areas you are looking at people may be able to advise on places to target for a rental but wherever you need to be if its England its house first then school (unless Private school)

You can actually apply from where you are (currently, as a main round late applicant), and if a school to which you have applied has a place available, be offered it.
However a) it makes sense to identify an area to move to, for the purposes of applying through the relevant LA and thinking of potential s hools and b) as you will not yet have a verified local address, you will not get an alternative 'nearest undersubscribed' school offered if no school ypi ask for has a place, which those actually living in the area will get. This will change as soon as you can provide the LA with proof of address, but still might not be very close to your new address.
