Moving from State to Private in Year 8 - SW London

Some of you may have seen my other posts.

We opted to stay in the state sector for secondary for various reasons.

Our eldest will be starting in September and my question now is: if, for one reason or another, this choice isn't right, how easy is it to move to a local independent senior school in year 8 or 9? I'm thinking of our local independent schools, such as Emanuel, Streatham and Clapham, Surbiton, Ibstock Place etc.

Daughter's Prep School's Deputy Head of Years 6-8 looking after the 11+ & 13+ applications/transfers. She seems to have her fingers on the pulse, and good connections with the various independent secondary schools in London and beyond. For example, she confirmed an offer for us before the official day, as we needed the information to help with our decision.

Thanks @vDad . That's good to know. Super competitive!

Emanuel circulated an email today saying they will be running a selection process in May for a small number of occasional places coming up in Y8, Y9 and Y10 in September. OP you may want to get onto their mailing list (and any others you are interested in) so that you are notified about similar opportunities in the future.

Good idea, the London schools have families being posted for work overseas so there would always be occasional places. We found those working for embassies have to rotate to another country posting so school would know occasional places at which year group. Also, girls going to coed boarding tend to move end of year 8 to start in Year 9.

Re: Emanuel as an example/potential target school for transfer in year 8.

This year, Emanuel had 3 openings in year 8 and they had 30 applicants - 10:1 ratio. In contrast, the 11+ process had over 1,300 applicants for 96 places (year 7) - 13:1 ratio.

But at 11+ it's not uncommon to apply to 5 or more schools, so in realty it's more like 3:1.

Not from the school's perspective when evaluating the various stages before offering places...
