11+ English tutor you have used for Sutton Grammar?

Hey folks,

Could anyone recommend a 11+ English tutor you have genuinely used to help your child get an offer in one of the Sutton Grammars? Who teaches comprehension, creative, persuasive etc. Please don't reply if you are tutor selling your services. I want to hear from parents! Thanks.

The tutor we used was absolutely brilliant but she made it clear from the outset that having her as a tutor would not guarantee a place at a grammar. You do know the sheer number of children applying?

Having said that, I would highly recommend her - she came to our house each week and we also had sessions in the holidays. Ex teacher in a range of pretty impressive schools, including Head of English. She wasn’t cheap though! And doesn’t advertise, has a waiting list but some days are less popular - we took a Friday slot originally then moved to a Monday when a space there opened up.

Thanks @Beanie567 – Children applying? Yes the number probably more from previous years due many reasons I can think of. The whole process is stressful and ludicrous. But we got to think of their futures. Its a tough world. Can this tutor you recommend do group sessions remotely? Appreciate if you can DM me here details to learn more? Many thanks.

Hey!

Just wanted to chime in—we had a fantastic tutor who really helped my daughter with her 11+ prep. They covered everything: verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning, comprehension, creative writing, persuasive writing. They also set homework and gave really helpful feedback, which made my life a lot easier hahaha. My daughter’s sitting the exam this year, and she’s feeling way more confident now.

If you want their details, just let me know—happy to share!

We had a great tutor for my son, he started in Year 5, and he absolutely loved the tutor, and they got on really well (though I had to push him a lot at the start—it’s not easy!).
It’s a ton of work to get into these grammar schools, so be prepared for some intense revision. I’d always recommend starting early if you can!
What year is your child in??

Hey @Josephslife – Thanks for your reply. Appreciate it! Yes please DM me the details and will take a look. My son is in Year 5 but we've had to change English tutor and now stuck again!🙄

Hi @Yasmin99 – Yeah its tough getting them motivated. My child is in Y5 currently, but we had to unfortunately change our English tutor (who we've had for a year) mainly for creative writing. If you recommend your tutor, please PM your details to me and I'll take a look. Many thanks!

I've PM'd you the details! Yes the motivation is one of the hardest things, the tutor does a better job than me😁

Beanie567 · 14/02/2025 14:47

The second exam for English is writing but based on the four triplets - if you’re only concentrating on creative writing you’re not going to hit the right elements in the exam. Our tutor was really good at explaining the different requirements for the grammar exams - I’d also say make sure you have booked some mock tests too as we found that useful as well.

i haven’t sent you the details of our tutor as she only does one to one and not groups but I’ll send it over if you would like.

@Beanie567 – The second exam for English is writing but based on the four triplets? For Sutton grammars, I believe this is for girl applicants only? But correct me if I'm wrong. If you can PM the details it might help. We're open to 1-1 if its affordable. Thanks again.

@Beanie567 Request please let me know your english tutor ... am desperately searching for english one to one tutor with only few months left for the exam please ...

Haho · 17/05/2025 09:11

Don’t bother. Get study books from whs or Amazon. Get your kid reading. I realised what a waste of time tutoring was during Covid when the tutors went online. 11 plus is not PhD level. If you have degree level education, or even GCSEs, you can guide your child. And if your child isn’t motivated I’d say they will struggle at a fast paced academic school, so maybe best not to push via tutor.

pascie11 · 29/07/2025 12:19

@Beanie567 good to know there are still tutors out there that add value. I'm torn between just doing it myself and spending a small fortune for someone else to! Would appreciate if you could dm your tutors details to explore this option further. Huge thanks
