Amersham or Berkhamsted secondary schools options - where to move?

Looking for advice on Amersham or Berkhamsted secondary schools options and where to move? We have 3 sons with twins going to secondary in 2026. We'd ideally prefer a state secondary but are open to independents as well. I commute into Old Street, London for work twice a week. I am now trying to get my head around the secondary school situation and how the two locations compare in terms of school options. I also know I need to start planning for 11+ and entrance exams. Looking for knowledge and advice.

Amersham is in Bucks, so still has 11+. That could limit your state choices.

11+ test for entry in 2026 will be in Sept 2025.....no sure if you already need to have a local Bucks address by then? Have a look on BCC website for timelines and specific schools for catchment info.

You would have option of Dr Challoners Grammar School (Boys) or Chesham Grammar (Co-Ed) if they passed.

If they didnt pass you could send them to Berkhamsted School or Thorpe Hse (in Gerrards Cross) both independents and a common route locally. Or you could try for Merchant Taylors (also independent).

You could also try for 12+ and 13+ (but think this only applies if spaces become available in the school) and join any of the local prep schools for years 7 & 8.

I dont know about the state schools in Berkhampsted which is in Herts.

Three of mine went to DCGS which was excellent.
