Sen 11+ application - extra time not given

My son sat the 11+ on 4/9, but only asked me tonight why they didn’t get the extra time they were supposed to in the exam.

I’ve emailed the school to ask about this - the letter from them said he would get 25% extra time in maths, vr and English. There were 4x 30 minute tests - so should have had 37.5mins in each.

Does anyone have any idea what would happen in this situation. He obviously doesn’t want to have to sit the exam again, but also I don’t want him to suffer for not having the extra marks that extra time could have gained him.

@prh47bridge - I’ve spoken to them and explained the situation that dc would still be disadvantaged by sitting the exam on their own after 6 weeks not revising for it.

They said they’d already spoken to the marking company ‘about adding 25% to the marks’ - who’d said they couldn’t get involved with that. I asked if they could ask the maths department to do the maths for them and they said they’d ask. 🙈

They were being nice, said it was their error (although they’re saying it was a mistake to say we’d get the extra time, but are now offering the extra time) and that they’ll talk to the headteacher and see what can be done.

I take it back… the school aren’t that helpful. I ended up speaking to the head who was unsympathetic and abrasive.

It’s re sit the exam or nothing. And if we want her to get the results in time to complete the caf then we have to resit on Monday .

If your son doesn't get a place, I think you have a case that he was disadvantaged by not being given the promised additional time, the school's actions in letting him resit with extra time are an admission that this was a mistake, and that the whole thing has disadvantaged him. I can't guarantee how an appeal panel will look at this, and I hope it won't be necessary, but I think it will be the beginnings of a decent case.

Thanks, I guess we just have to wait and see… dc is adamant that they’ve done the test once and shouldn’t have to do it again, so it’ll be a weekend of coaxing them into doing some practice. 🤦‍♀️

Hi, OP, how did it go in the end? I’m so sorry you were in this position!
