I’ve just received confirmation of my child’s GCSE subjects for year 10, and it lists one of them as French Business. Child tells me that it’s for the lowest achieving sets in the school. I’ve never heard of this as a GCSE subject and I will ask the school about myself. But I was just wondering if this was a full GCSE subject or something different?

I googled “French Business GCSE” and my guess is that it’s this. Available as a Level 1 qualification (GCSE is Level 2) so that would fit with the lower sets comment.

Is MFL compulsory at this school?

Interesting. I've never heard of this qualification and it was only certified from this June (so maybe that's why). It looks interesting tho. It's a L1 or L2, depending on how high a mark you get. Three-quarters of the assessment is via controlled assessment (ie sat in school lessons) so that might suit a student who would struggle with exams. If they achieved a L2 that would be equivalent level to a GCSE, but L1 candidates would also come out with a qualification. It's very much based on using French in a business context - so things like booking hotels, understanding the weather report, writng an email in French.

Here's the spec

Sample paper is there for the externally sat element. Some of it requires only English comp skills but some is also in French, and there are some elements where writing in French is needed. I think achieving a L2 would be reasonably challenging.

Thank you both. I’ll admit, I only did a quick google, but nothing came up for me, and I honestly thought it was just a typo.

Yes, I believe MFL is compulsory. It would have been more helpful if the school had provided more information on this, especially with it being a fairly new qualification.
