Wimborne Bournemouth Secondary School Grammar or State

Hi, we plan to move to Wimbourne near Bournemouth in Dorset and my son is currently in year 8. He is academic and previously passed 11 plus.

We may have to apply midterm but please can I get some recommendations for secondary schools including mixed or boys grammar schools.

I appreciate they are probably oversubscribed but still would like an idea as to what would be within our catchment area for both state schools and grammar schools for mixed or boys only.

Thank you for your words of wisdom.

Unfortunately Wimborne is not in catchment for the Bournemouth and Poole grammars ( all of which are single sex). You could call and ask ( Poole Grammar or Bournemouth School for Boys) but unless he scored extremely highly at 11+ it’s normally a no as there will be in catchment kids looking to move for year 9 to take up places by those leaving for Canford etc. Most DC in Wimborne go to Queen Elizabeth which is a coed high school ( Year 9 upwards).

Catchment area for Poole Grammar (boys). Don’t think you’d have much of a chance getting into Bournemouth School (boys grammar)

Lots of children travel from Wimborne and other OOC areas. In the last few years the school has admitted students that didn't pass the test.

I think having to take an entrance test is likely but it would be worth enquiring.
They have just had a good Ofsted but the headteacher is leaving and parents, certainly of the older years are not that impressed with the current head.
QE is currently also having change of leadership and things are unsettled.

However both schools, in a national framework, are fine.

Corfe Hills in Broadstone is undersubscibed and would definitely have space. But again a solid school.

Apologies- I stand corrected re catchment- I was thinking of someone specific and then realised they were Blandford not Wimborne!
