Don't they usually get another day off if Bank Holiday falls in holiday time?

Bank Holiday on 27th May which is holiday anyways.

Am I wrong or would they usually have the Friday or following Monday off?

The school can add an inset day to the end of half term if they want, but they don’t have to, as far as I know.

SheilaFentiman · 20/05/2024 19:08

No, the half term is anchored to that holiday every may

QueSyrahSyrah · 20/05/2024 19:09

I thought Whitsun Bank Holiday was always in May half-term, aside from the odd anomaly (eg: Isle of Man where half-term is different because of TT week)??

SheilaFentiman · 20/05/2024 19:09

My school has an INSET on the Friday before or the Monday after, but that’s optional (and wouldn’t stop gcse or a level exams being on that date)

MarchingFrogs · 20/05/2024 19:10

Not around here, it's just part of half term - similarly iirc with Easter when Good Friday and Easter Monday fall over the middle weekend of the holidays, rather than at the beginning or the end.

Nc4ThisObvi · 20/05/2024 19:10

Yh maybe it's school specific, I just vaguely remember it happening previously but not this time.

TinkerTiger · 20/05/2024 19:11

No. An extra day only happens if it falls on a Sunday. And this is for everyone, this isn't specific to students

clary · 20/05/2024 19:12

That holiday is always in half term!

RampantIvy · 20/05/2024 19:12

No, and not in secondary schools in England and Wales because GCSEs will be taking place either side of half term.

HideTheCroissants · 20/05/2024 19:15

The late May bank holiday has fallen during the half term break as long as I can remember and I’m in my fifties! Same as Christmas falling in the Christmas break, Easter (usually) falling during the holidays, late August bank holiday always during the summer holidays……..

Ereyraa · 20/05/2024 19:15

Never had that here in the SE

Janek · 20/05/2024 19:18

The only bank holiday that doesn't fall in school holidays is May day (the early May bank holiday).

When there have been extra bank holidays, for example for the Queen's jubilees, that have fallen in the holidays, I think there was a day off in lieu for those.

I think your prior school must have had an inset day tacked on

NewName24 · 20/05/2024 19:22

Agree with everyone else.
That isn't 'a thing'.
Apart from the first Monday in May, all BHs are within school holidays - in England - I know Scotland has different term dates and different BHs, not sure about NI and Wales.
The 'added' BHs (Queen's Funeral, Coronation for eg) are sometimes done differently, often to do with short notice.

CorylusAgain · 20/05/2024 19:22

Spring bank holiday has been in half term holiday for as long I can remember. And I'm old!

BarcardiWithGadaffia · 20/05/2024 19:33

Unless your school has an unusual term set up the May half term always haa the bank holiday in it

The number of days in school is aet the same for everyone, it's not like work where you get a day back for a BH

You're probably remembering the extra bank holiday for the jubilee which fell in the school holidays so schools got to add it wherever they liked in the calendar so that teachers got a bonus jubilee day off like everyone else.

JaninaDuszejko · 20/05/2024 19:39

Adults get the following Monday or Tuesday off if Christmas, Boxing Day or New Years Day fall on a weekend day. The other bank holidays are all weekdays (Mon or Fri).

All the bank holidays except May Day fall in school holidays. The bank holidays are accounted for in the school year. The only situation where it might seem like they get an extra day would be Easter when if it falls at the beginning or end of the holiday the Bank Holiday falls outside the two weeks of the holiday.

TheSnowyOwl · 20/05/2024 19:39

None of the school holidays that have bank holidays automatically get extra days here. Easter, May half term, summer holidays and Christmas all have at least one bank holiday in them.

BarcardiWithGadaffia · 20/05/2024 19:41

I'm guessing you went it school not in England @Nc4ThisObvi and your children's school just happens to have had I set days on the same day but still unusual I'd have thought

BendingSpoons · 20/05/2024 20:27

A couple of years ago we got an extra bank holiday that fell in half term. I think it might have been for the Jubilee but not sure. Schools were allowed to close for an extra day so teachers didn't miss out but it was s one-off thing.

BendingSpoons · 20/05/2024 20:31

Screen shot from a school at random that explains my previous post.

Don't they usually get another day off if Bank Holiday falls in holiday time?
OpusGiemuJavlo · 20/05/2024 20:39

No you are incorrect.

Summer half term is always the bank holiday week at the end of May.

The law is that state schools must be open to pupils for 190 days during the school year. Term times generally cover 195 days and individual schools usually have their 5 inset days whenever they choose (some schools still have them set by the LEA). A bank holiday falling in term time wouldn't usually reduce the number of teaching days - there would be an extra day added at the end of the term to make up for it - unless a legal declaration reduced the number of obligatory school sessions as happened in PP mentioned case above.

PuttingDownRoots · 20/05/2024 20:43

Except in 2002, the May half term has always been anchored to that week due to GCSE and A level exams.

A primary school could choose to extend it with an extra inset day... they can have those whenever.
