What is the M3 paper in (gcse?) maths?

I realise there will be a heap of judgement coming with the answers in all likelihood. However, it's not my family and I'm not the parent.

My friend says her son has asked her for help to prepare for his M3 maths exam this coming Thurs. She has sent me a photo of a list of topics and the categories of topics are algebra, number, data and shape. Is M3 a particular module? My friend didn't know what it is so I searched and Google suggested either a module or a 'gateway' paper. She's in NI and other friends back there have kids sitting GCSEs so is M3 a GCSE foundation maths paper?

I do realise she ought to be more involved and attentive to his schooling but I can't force that. I can only encourage. I've suggested she gets him to work through practise papers so she can see where he is stuck.

There seems to be information here: https://ccea.org.uk/key-stage-4/gcse/subjects/gcse-mathematics-2017

It looks like M3 is the first paper of 2 in a stream of the GCSE which seems to be somewhere between foundation and higher? I don’t know if that is a NI thing as my knowledge is all England based
