I think we found a hidden gem of a school

A few months back my DS has started studying at a Canadian school called Phoenix Magnet Academy. He came over for the Easter holidays and it was fantastic to see his confidence grow so much. I think we have found a hidden gem as it is a relatively new school. Anyone in a similar situation who is mulling over sending their DS/DD to a private school or college, I highly recommend the leap (if you can afford it).

"The leap" to... sending your secondary school aged child to Canada for the majority of the year?

A little unrealistic for perhaps 99.9999% of the UK population, no?

TheExclusiveSandwich · 08/05/2024 06:08

Lol. In Canada.

effoffwind · 08/05/2024 06:40

Is there a school bus pick up from the West Midlands ? 🚎

Cantthinkofadifferentname · 08/05/2024 06:49

And a snip at 70,000 Canadian Dollars. Not clear but probably a year

Nah I like my child thanks, I don't think shipping him off to a school a 10 hour flight away so he can gain confidence is what anyone would consider a good parental decision.

HamBagelNoCheese · 08/05/2024 07:11

Do they take husbands too?

TulipPower1981 · 08/05/2024 07:17

So happy for you OP!! That’s amazing. Thanks for letting us know.

Needanewjobsoon · 08/05/2024 07:18

Bit extreme. Next level up from "shall I send to a boarding school and just visit for games.."

Sorry love can't pop over this term..

1ittlegreen · 08/05/2024 07:21

I want to see my child everyday thanks.

Vettrianofan · 08/05/2024 07:23

🤣

@ThePearlWasp I really hope you’re going to come back and explain the context of your OP.

Or it might look as if you have started a thread merely to be annoying.

JoanThursday · 08/05/2024 07:25

#ad ?

RositaB · 08/05/2024 07:25

Gosh, it is hidden isn't it?!

When I googled schools in my local catchment it didn't show up at all.

I wonder why??

TulipPower1981 · 08/05/2024 07:27

I think I’d be annoyed they charge me more cos I’m a foreigner OP! Have you bought a flat in British Columbia? It’s quite a leap in fees isn’t it?

What was local option? Eton?! Harrow?!

Littletreefrog · 08/05/2024 07:32

I dont think they hid it OP I think the fact it is in another country is why people don't know about it.

BringMeSunshineAllDayLong · 08/05/2024 07:34

Weirdly I love seeing my child every day.

determinedtomakethiswork · 08/05/2024 07:36

It's difficult to think of a human writing that opening post and it's difficult to think of a human asking AI to do it either.

BlossomBlossomBlossom · 08/05/2024 07:47

The cost to international pupils is around £40,000 - so at the lower end of full boarding fees for a UK Public School.

But I don’t know what the subject of this thread is - the OP doesn’t seem to be asking a question, and we have no idea how she came to decide on this particular Canadian school - so it’s hard to see the relevance to most UK based parents.

(Perhaps I’m being insular and MN feels like a Canadian forum if you’re in Canada? Not sure where the OP resides, though.)

Gazelda · 08/05/2024 07:49

I'll put it on my list of Open Day visits.

IWFH · 08/05/2024 07:56

We considered this school but the risk of our child being eaten by Black bear, cougars, coyotes, grizzly bears, or elk outweighed the educational advantages.
Oh and the commute (including the M25) would have been dreadful.

Are you the head OP?

Do you work in marketing for Magnet Academy and the problem is that you don't have enough kids so you have to promote it internationally?

BlossomBlossomBlossom · 08/05/2024 10:23

I was interested that the school uses the word ‘bursary’ for what appear to be non-means tested scholarships.

One of which - the Cultural Bursary - seems quite horrifically cringeworthy and othering. But I realise that may be my perception as it’s not how we do things here.
