Potential move to Sheffield - secondary schools in year transfers

I am thinking of moving to Sheffield for work and realise the timing is not great (as my children are in year 6 and year 8 respectively). We would be looking for in year transfers for both of them. Would prefer to live to the West / South West but I suspect all the schools are particularly oversubscribed in this area?

Are there any schools likely to have free places or can others who know the area predict where we might be offered places - I fear it could be some where potentially some distance away / not doing well.

Obviously I know this is a lottery but thinking through what might happen here really helps decide what to do. If anyone knows secondary schools in Sheffield or has moved to the area over the last few years, it would be good to hear how that worked out?

Many thanks

This might help the spreadsheet on the bottom shows the oversubscribed schools for this year.

Im afraid Aal of the secondary schools in the southwest are here.

Schools in the south west of sheffield

Tapton
High Storrs
Silverdale
King Edward V11
King Ecberts

Its a bun fight every year. King Edwards seem to accept a lot. But the others are better schools.Waiting list?

Bradfield is OK. It’s not on the list.

Henry Fanshawe in Dronfield,

Stocksbridge and Pennistone are OK. They’re nearer Barnsley

TizerorFizz · 26/04/2024 15:53

Looking at the data: King Ecbert only refused 5. So is that the wait list? If so, it’s not many. I don’t think you have much option but to move, get an address and apply. Can be difficult journeys though if school isn’t where you want to live.

Thank you for the info everyone. I assume the schools not on this list are not over-subscribed, at least for the year 7 in September, though when I phoned the council last Friday they told me every school was full!

The waiting list for King Ecgberts did seem quite short so I may try calling them direct.

It works like this in Sheffield:

Mercia is top.

Tapton, Silverdale and High Storrs are kind of equal next as they move up down each year, but are very similar.

King Ecberts is usually next.

Not in the area, these are general comments.

It’s not an in year transfer for your year 6 as they will start secondary in sept. Almost all schools have sibling preferences. ( though do check)

Can you do an in year application to as many schools as you think best for your year 8 and then one of you get up there with her (Airbnb if needed) so that she can get on roll ASAP. Then make a late application for your younger one who would hopefully be high on the waiting list with sibling preference.

Mercia is quite new and considered strict. An acquired taste some think. KE is a sound choice and in a decent area. Linked to Newfield for 6th form but journey not that easy.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 29/04/2024 09:53

Mercia is in the top 5 schools in the U.K.,

However l would never send my child there!

TizerorFizz · 29/04/2024 12:07

Well that’s the issue. Suits some and others run a mile. Top5 for what? Not results I think!

Like Michaela School then. They limit GCSEs taken though.

Mercia isn't top in my opinion. It's the last school I would want my child to go to.

Ermintrudewasinnocent · 02/05/2024 19:36

I would not want it either - but it sounds like I'd be really unlikely to get it in an in-year transfer anyway. Thanks for all the info!

Hi @Ermintrudewasinnocent We moved to Sheffield a few years ago when my children were end of Y6 and Y4. Missed the secondary school application deadline, but still got my child into secondary school of choice. Can PM if you need advice
