Just that really ,head of School in Southampton couldnt believe how no one can cook a jacket Potato! Really bad thing is that some children only get this to eat! Do you think old fashioned School meals were better(pink custard ) for those older MN users! We all complained then!

DC's primary school used to mess up jacket potatoes as well. Just raw potatoes.

I mean, they used to mess up most other dishes as well, but it's the jacket potato thing that really got to me. How crap does a professional cook need to be to fuck up a jacket potato?

I actually think they are better than when I was at school… but what really irritates me is how they preach about healthy meals but the school dinners I’ve seen are some of the most unhealthy meals ever!! Lots of processed food… little cooking from scratch. I get the problem of cooking from scratch but don’t lecture parents and then serve substandard food.

Actually I’ll take that back there not better but about the same!!

My DC have always eaten school meals and I have always asked about what they eat and what they thought.

Food quality has worsened and it will probably mostly be about cost. Ingredient costs have gone up and budget remained static or fallen.

Sometimes it is about the skill of the catering team. Large scale batch catering is not easy, particularly at a large comp.

I also think our society's general understanding of food has declined as fewer people cook from scratch and as palates get overwhelmed by high sugar, high salt processed foods.

This affects what students expect but also the general standard of food knowledge in school kitchens and among catering suppliers. However, there will still people out there trying to do a good job in difficult circumstances.
