Could someone please advise on Day house choices? DS is v academic, into sports but not rugby so much, plays 1 instrument.

Any comments on Smythe, Welldon and Cowdrey in particular very welcome.

do you have an offer? if so go and do the tours, it's the best way to see for yourself. We saw Welldon and Whitworth yesterday, they were both fab and my son (into music/drama/cricket but not field sports) enjoyed both.

Admissions keen to emphasise that for day boys, house choice doesn't matter too much - they are all great, no such thing as 'the sporty house' etc and the boys will find a strong community whichever one they end up in.

Yes for offer. Have booked tours but thought I'd gather some thoughts here first. Sounds like they're all good and nothing to worry about. Glad your son enjoyed both houses. Did you get to meet the housemasters and ask questions?

yes, both tours were with housemasters. as buildings the houses are simple and functional, there isn't that much to admire in terms of aesthetics :) but the chats with the housemasters in their studies provided the best insight we've gained into life at the school - much more revealing (in a good way) than the open day/general tour etc. we left feeling really positive and impressed.

We gave priority to the distance from main campus. As mentioned before, for day boys there is not much difference.

swisschoc · 08/02/2024 16:55

@LuluKentGirl that sounds very promising!

@2morasmum do you know if the housemasters' specialties (eg English, Politics or science) matter much? Our initial thought was to go with a housemaster that has similar interests as DS. Although I'm also aware they can change every few years so it might not mean much.

@swisschoc it is a nice thing to have, but their interest will evolve. Go to the visits and discuss with your son which one he would prefer to spend his free time in.

Has anyone heard about day house allocation yet (they said mid April so thought we'd hear by now)?
