Independent school offer placed 1st on bursary waiting list

I was wondering if anyone has been in a similar situation. My daughter has had an offer for a place at a local independent school but no bursary offer. On the email we have been told we have been placed on the bursary waiting list and that we are 1st on this list. Anyone been lucky and eventually got the bursary? Thanks

Aren't you better asking the school itself how many 1st placed children were given bursaries in the past ten years. May give you a better indication.

I did speak to the school but they wouldn’t say, just said things always change. So thought I’d reach out on here- we have applied to some nice state schools too but dd has cp so thought we’d try the smaller independent school :)

I used to work in an independent school and was responsible for bursaries. Quite often they were turned down, usually because the child had had a better offer elsewhere but also for other reasons such as travel time. So there is definitely hope - and I guess it partly depends how desirable the particular school is.
Good luck!

This is positive to hear thank you!

I think if you're 1st than it's quite possible, depending on their generosity. If they offer 100% ones, than unlikely, but if it's something like 50% max than I'd say pretty good chance.

I would always advise anyone seeking a bursary to apply to more than one school. In my experience School A’s 80% offer is likely to spur School B on to make a higher award offer.

So if your daughter is on the waiting list for one school, it’s entirely possible another might have made a firm offer.

Thought I’d do a quick update in case anyone else is in the situation now or the future! We did end up being offered a bursary and my daughter will start September :)

Amazing. Lucky you.

May I ask is bursary for people on low income? We are looking to apply for my daughter and we are on low income. My husband had to stop to work due to a neurological disorder and we are on 1 income now.

My daughter is in year 5 now. She has one more year at her school. We are struggling to pay the fees.

We would like to apply for secondary for a bursary.

Are you comfortable to share what discount you received please?

Thank you
