DS is in year 11, we attended all the open evenings for the grammar schools in the area. He loved SHSG and wants to apply. Does anyone have experience of a DC starting in the 6th?

He should be able to meet the entry requirements 🤞.

DS1 joined the sixth form at SHSG, but it was ten years ago now and I suspect things will have changed at least a little (different HT and Head of Sixth Form since then, for a start). His experience was certainly more positive than not, though.

Have you checked the oversubscription criteria for external students? My DD is also looking at grammar sixth forms, and what they state as their entry requirements and what you actually need to get in is quite different, as they are all oversubscribed. They rank students on an average of all their predicted grades, and offer places to the highest predicted first. Most of the grammars near us require external students to have a 7.5 average, or 8+ if taking maths.

Thank you @MarchingFrogs, the school has a lovely feel to it. It's good to hear that your DS's experience was a positive one.

Yes , @newmum1976 he should have the results required to get a place. It will depend on how the exams go as any offer will be conditional. I understand that his results will have to be much higher than those required for students already at the school. Good luck to your DD for the exams and applications.
