Order of school choices

I will be listing grammar schools and some academy schools that have a lottery system, and my child is out of area for the grammars.

The only local school I would be remotely happy to get would be naturally my sixth choice.

(In reality my child will get a school place with 1 of the 2 really underperforming schools, so will not be left without a school place).

If say I put the only local school at number 2, does that mean I can only appeal for the school listed at number 1?

if say I put the only local school I want at position 3, and grammars at 4 and 5 then does that mean if I get the only local school, then I can't appeal for the grammar places at 4 and 5? Similarly can I go on the waiting list for any schools I want?

Put the schools on the genuine order you prefer them.
There is no disadvantage in having a school 6th compared to first. If you nominally get a place for more than one school, your order of preferences determine which place you get offered. The only thing that makes 6th choice less likely is if you get a school higher on the list.

So, there should be no need to appeal for schools lower down your list, because you've already got a school you prefer over those ones.

Put them in the actual order of preference. There is no disadvantage in doing so. If you prefer the grammars, list them above the local school.

Put the school you want most at number 1.
Put your safe back up at number 6. Put the other schools in order of preference

You are paying for six schools. Preference only comes in if you qualify for more than one. (So you qualify for 1, 3 and 6... you get school 1. If you just qualify for school 6, you get school 6 for example.)
