Almost two weeks in to year 7 and DS still has no friends. Should I be worried?

DS has ASC and lacks confidence when it comes to friendships. He has been quite down these last few days because he says everyone has made at least one new friend; whereas he has not. It’s making him so sad.

The friends he had from primary school moved to the same school but DS was the only one not grouped with them (the school sets on ability and DS was put in a higher set), so he knows nobody.

I’ve encouraged him to join clubs but I suspect this won’t help as he does many extra curricular already but has never been able to make friends. He doesn’t really understand what a friend is and can’t tell when someone is a friend or not.

Is too early to worry?

I would contact school and ask them to support with facilitating friendship. As time goes on it might be harder to make friends as groups get more established

Definitely contact the school and explain as above.

Keep up friendships and clubs outside school too.

My kids are also saying that groups have already formed- but there will be movement and changes soon as kids fall out, branch out from primary friends etc
