English literature a pass but language a 3 question

Dd got a 5 in literature but 3 in language (school looked at it and too far off a 4 to ask for it to be remarked). So has she passed English and therefore doesn't have to retake language or does she need to retake language? Google search gives 2 very different answers.

She’ll have to redo language. Sorry.

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 24/08/2023 15:50

Yes she will need to retake. English language is the one that counts as "English", not English literature.

Thanks

For funding for 16-19 , I believe either count. From here:

Both are supposed to count. At least, that's what we were told the last time the qualification changed. In reality though, lots of places still want Language. Which is a pisser, because our kids do better in Lit.

HaveYouHeardOfARoadAtlas · 24/08/2023 17:11

A friend of mine her son had this and his college told him he had to resit language, that literature didn’t count.

yorkypuds · 24/08/2023 17:18

Doesn't need to retake unless they want to! Either/ or is acceptable pass in English!

SnowfallSnowball · 24/08/2023 20:56

My daughter has to resit English Language, she passed Literature but the college she applied for stated she’d have to resist in order to do her A-levels. She did a written assessment at the college and they said it was good enough for her to start and to study alongside her A-levels but will be monitoring her work. If she does well she’ll carry on if not she’ll have to do an additional year and start at foundation. My daughter was pretty chilled about it really, I was disappointed for her but she did pretty well in her other subjects so slight frustrating but needs must!

katcatkat · 24/08/2023 21:05

My daughter didn't have to resit for college with 4 eng lit and 3 eng lang but I can understand why some schools might say different.

SnowfallSnowball · 24/08/2023 21:14

@katcatkat can I ask, what did your daughter study at college?

katcatkat · 24/08/2023 21:20

Catering she really wants to be a chef and loves it.

Sadtimes1 · 31/08/2023 22:55

My DS didn’t have to resit English Lang for college either. He got a 3 in Lang and a 4 in lit. We were told that was enough to study level 3 ext media and tech (equivalent 3 A levels)

Sadtimes1 · 31/08/2023 22:55

He has just finished college.

MoreHairyThanScary · 31/08/2023 22:57

My DD is in the same situation although school are asking for a review of marks as she was 1 mark off the 4,

I still want her to resit as so many jobs etc want a 5.

Boomboom22 · 31/08/2023 22:57

I think if studying a levels def but really don't do a levels! T levels prob yes retake lang. Any other level 3 eg btec no, requirements are met already.

Sadtimes1 · 31/08/2023 23:56

I am not sure if you can get funding to retake language if you have passed literature. It seems that the government consider the mandatory condition of English grade 4 or above to be already met if you have passed literature. I couldn’t find a definitive answer online.

Shannaratiger · 05/09/2023 14:56

I've got the same situation, DS got 5 in literature but a 3 in language. His college has cancelled the accountancy full time college course he was going to do. He has therefore applied for the only apprentiship within transport distance. If he doesn't get the job he will have to take a year out and I don't know how he will retake it.

Comefromaway · 05/09/2023 15:34

Both count in terms of funding for 6th form/FE college but my son's degree course wanted a Grade 4 in English Language, they were not bothered about maths or English Lit.

Sadtimes1 · 06/09/2023 22:54

So if you pass literature will the government still fund you to retake language? As a pp said, as far as the government are concerned, the condition has been met as you have passed English be it literature or language.
@Shannaratiger I am so sorry to hear about the college cancelling your sons place on his course. I have had the same thing happen with my DS this year but he failed English lang and lit (severe dyslexia). He is having to do a level 2 and resitting English alongside it. Would that be an option for your DS if he doesn’t get the apprenticeship? Colleges usually have a lot of different options for level 2 courses. I hope it all works out well for your DS.

Shannaratiger · 21/09/2023 14:33

Quick update. DS got on to a business skills management course which will give him loads of useful skills information for his accountancy course next year. He was also told that he didn't need to redo english language because he got the 5 in literature but he's decided he wants to redo it anyway which is fine. he's very happy and settled. Hope everyone's dc's are sorted and enjoying there next stage of education.

Sadtimes1 · 21/09/2023 18:51

@Shannaratiger that is great news, so pleased that your DS is settled. Will he get funding to retake English Language, as he has already met the government requirement by passing English Lit? This happened to one of my DS’s and he didn’t resist English Language which I now think was a mistake.
