Holcombe Grammar, is this a good school for my son?

Hi All,

I'm very new to mumsnet however I have read lots of great articles and feedback from wonderful members.

My son has been offered a place in Holcombe Grammar, joining as a year 7. We have read some not so positive reviews online about the school and would be keen to understand first hand from anyone who has kids in the school or previously did.

Main concerns picked up online were around bullying and racism. Both a big worry for us so keen to get first hand view, we visited for a walkthrough and saw lots of posters about stopping both. Any advice would be great!

Surely it’s what you think, what you observed, your hunch? Others will have anecdotal accounts of course.
Every school will have bullying & racism, it’s to what extent and how it’s addressed that matters
If you don’t take the place what is your back up plan? What if you decline it and end up at a school equally or more bullying/racist?
Being a grammar it’s selective so I’d be querying what happens if child isn’t attaining the required grades

Hi, just wondered what you decided? We liked Holcombe and it's one of our choices for this year's submission for school.

Thanks 😊

Hi did you send your son to Holcombe? Very keen to find out how things are going as my son has just passed and we might send him there / or the maths? Does anyone have children at either? Xx

We've looked a lot and think we're going to Holcombe. Maths school seems a bit more rigourous for academia but Holcombe seems more relaxed. I think it feels more like us there and I like the ethos. My friends son's go there and like it homework seems more manageable. Let me know if you choose there maybe our two could see each other there.

I have a son in holcombe who is in year 8 now... So far, no reason to complain, my son stays out of trouble and does his school works. His reports are amazing and my second son may be joining him soon. For me I have no reason to condemn the school.
