Wales - is First Aid part of new curriculum?

My dd has been told to work out her topic for Welsh Bacc over the holidays. She wants to do it in teaching first aid in schools but we can't find any very clear guidelines about whether it IS going to be taught in Welsh schools.

The closest thing I can find is this which sounds very wishy washy.

"Schools should also consider what strategies their learners will need to be able to safely intervene to support others who may be at risk. This should include lifesaving skills and first aid".

Can anyone help?

My DC were taught first aid at secondary school in Wales a couple of years ago. I don't know if it was required or not though.

(If this is the extended project bit of Welsh Bacc, ie A level equivalent, she might be better off choosing a topic which has lots of easily sourced data.)

Thank you for your reply. I know they haven't done it up to now in her school. It's for the GCSE. She wants to do something to do with first aid because she volunteers for St John's but we're struggling to find the right topic.

And yes, data is the problem.

If I remember correctly (have a DD going into Y13 so not long since she did this) for the individual project they need to come up with a question that they can research before coming to some conclusions - how about something like "Would compulsory first aid training in schools save lives?"

I just googled "first aid training stats" and the Red Cross have done research into how many people know what to do (not many), how many lives are saved, how many lives could be saved etc. so lots of evidence there to argue that yes it should be compulsory.

Just a thought, feel free to ignore. I am trying to distract myself having stupidly watched something scary on tv just before going to bed 🤦‍♀️

Here's a useful article - weird how slow and vague the Welsh Govt has been about this. Iirc in Welsh Bacc they like refs to Wales so she could say that this change is good, but the wording should be stronger with more detail etc

Gosh thank you very much. I'd found the Red Cross one but not read it yet. That's very kind of you.

No worries, it distracted me nicely and saved me from sleeping with the light on!
