Hello all
My son is about to finish year 5 and is an August baby so not 10 till then. We have just recently been left some money to be for my son’s education. This is unexpected but we are very happy. However, the entrance exam for Merchant Taylor’s in Crosby is in November so we don’t have tons of time for extra tuition.
My son visited a private 11 plus tutor this weekend and did a mock assessment to see his raw ability as we have not looked at any tests and for English he got 114 and maths 115.
I am unsure how good or bad these are really. She just noted he is very bright and capable.
I know for London schools you need around 131 scores but not sure if the same for Merchants in Liverpool?

I would recommend asking the school what they are looking for, having been through the process this year the schools outrightly told me the score/expectations the more competitive and over-subscribed might not but always worth an ask. Also, there can be other factors considered, interviews, sports, drama, etc..

As tutoring continues you may find that technique and speed vs accuracy improves too and the scores will rise. You have time to improve these scores they are good. Also as your tutor finds any gaps and plugs those can have a dramatic change on the scores.

If you are doing the selective entrance for one school, I would say it's worth having a backup school just in case for the sanity of the whole family. Most families will apply to 2 schools, some up to 6 if the test results are shared.

Good luck!

Thank you so much that is really helpful @CharlotteFors I am so grateful he potentially has the opportunity now for an education I could never have dreamt of but just wish we had more notice to swot up. However, I am a firm believer in what is meant to be will be. We will throw everything into helping him in a non pressured way :)
