Private schools In Manchester, preferably mixed sex

Any local recommendations? DD is doing 11+ next year, but is borderline for the local grammar school and I’m not keen on the single sex local high school.

Does anyone have any personal recommendations for other privates within the Manchester area? Preferably mixed but would consider single sex also!

The main ones I can think of are Withington Girls, Manchester High school for girls. I think there might be a co-ed private in Cheadle.

stockport grammar is fee paying ; not sure if you need to,sit an entrance exam.

Bridgewater?

lunar1 · 20/05/2023 08:28

Where abouts in Manchester are you looking?

Scaredmumsickchild · 20/05/2023 11:31

@idsisatwat she definitely wouldn’t pass for Withington, she’s pretty borderline for passing the 11+ but Withington is really hard to get into.

@lunar1 not sure really, we are in Trafford but not really sure what’s out there!

Bury Grammar is excellent. They schools appear to be single sex but they are going more and more coed and the 6 form is coed.

Easily reached by tram from Trafford on the Bury/Altrincham line.

My friends children are in Bury grammar, the have boys and girls separated but do mix for some things. The traffic would be awful for you.

As someone else mentioned, Bridgewater is mixed, and not bad for traffic from Trafford. I think it's the only properly mixed independent school.

You need to look at traffic and public transport options if needed rather than distance for anything in GM.

Sounds like you live in the same part of Trafford as me.

St Bedes in Whalley Range is Catholic but mix ed and runs a school bus through our suburb. You don't have to be Catholic but may not be for you.

Bridgewater is also easy to get to, much smaller, a neighbour goes there on the bus each day.

A lot of the other private schools seem too far eg Stockport, Cheadle Hulme without moving.

weareallout · 22/05/2023 10:42

Cheadle Hulme has a very big area it covers

Hmmm

Cheadle Hulme
Stockport Grammar
King’s Macclesfield
Bury Grammar

St Bedes is your best bet, location wise.

I had DDs at Bury Grammar Girls in the 2010s and I found the school to be quite sexist - very different opportunities offered in the girls’ school compared to in the boys’, based on gender stereotypes.
I do think this may have been turned around in recent years with the school becoming more co-educational, and I’m only speaking about the senior school as my DDs joined in year 7.
