Anyone fancy joining me on a thread, as the 2023 offers go out?

We didn't apply to many schools, so I'm on tenterhooks right now. Really hoping for Stockport Grammar for DS.

I’ll join. Also waiting on SGS and Cheadle Hulme. Do you know what time the emails go out tomorrow? Good luck for your DS!

longshot · 27/02/2023 13:21

SGS is also our preferred…

SalvePuella · 27/02/2023 13:43

Good luck to your DC too!

I don't know what time. I thought the results were being posted out? It's a learning curve to me - I am new to it all!

Funnily enough we also applied to SGS and CHS, but are hoping for SGS. SGS must have put something in those Open Day coffees Wink

So glad I found this! We're also waiting for SGS. Is it definitely tomorrow? My elder child is there and I can't even remember if it's an email or postal response.
Did they give you an indication in the interview? They were pretty positive for us but I don't want to count my chickens.

ThirstyMeeples · 27/02/2023 15:01

There were way more than normal sitting for SGS so I'm nervous. Good luck to everyone!

SalvePuella · 27/02/2023 15:12

I've checked the Stockport Grammar School website: it says "offers - 28th February" and refers to what "the letter will say."

Letter by post or by email though? Hmm, who knows?!

OP posts:
longshot · 27/02/2023 15:35

Sorry I may have confused things. When we had the interview at cheadle she told us that they send by post today and by email tomorrow but I’m not sure on the SGS process it may be post only there.

We got very positive vibes from SGS, they mentioned DD’s exam result which I think was a good sign but who knows. I have no real idea what to expect and don’t know many others who applied so haven’t discussed it all much. Cheadle was also very positive for us at interview but harder to read. SGS person asked ‘if we offer you a place will you accept?’ Which my DC emphatically said yes to 😂.

ThirstyMeeples · 27/02/2023 15:52

I can definitely recommend SGS if you get a choice. There are so many extra curricular activities and the support is fantastic.
I do remember getting a letter but I can't remember if we received an email beforehand....

snowtrees · 27/02/2023 21:32

Numbers of applicants for both SGS & CH were 50% up. SGS was 600 for 150 places but most also sit MGS for boys or WGS/MH or Trafford grammars too

snowtrees · 27/02/2023 22:07

I know a lot that applied to MGS and every single one got a place. All bright boys with tutors etc but not exceptional. I think you'll all be fine. I thinks there's same odds overall as previous years

SalvePuella · 28/02/2023 08:42

Thank you @snowtrees

Fingers crossed for today!

SGS have the wait list also don't they? Someone I know got in a bit later last year.

longshot · 28/02/2023 09:42

We’ve heard that DD has been offered a place at both SGS and Cheadle so now she has to decide. I hope you’ve had the email too @SalvePuella and @ThirstyMeeples !

SalvePuella · 28/02/2023 09:43

The email from SGS has landed... DS has a place!

OP posts:
SalvePuella · 28/02/2023 09:45

CHS email just dropped. They've offered DS a place too. Bloody hell - wasn't expecting the double Shock

OP posts:
longshot · 28/02/2023 09:49

Congratulations @SalvePuella for your DS!

SalvePuella · 28/02/2023 09:56

Thank you @longshot - I'm in shock tbh. The best kind of shock though!

Congratulations to your DD too. Now it's choices, choices...

OP posts:
ThirstyMeeples · 28/02/2023 11:35

Yes DS has a place! So relieved and can't wait to tell him after school today. Congratulations to everyone x

SalvePuella · 28/02/2023 12:12

Congratulations to your DS @ThirstyMeeples. Well, it looks like a full house. Didn't they do well? Grin

OP posts:
snowtrees · 28/02/2023 14:30

Well done all.. hoping others I know got the same!

MushPeas · 19/12/2023 10:21

Hi @snowtrees @ThirstyMeeples @SalvePuella @longshot I hope you don't mind me jumping on this thread from earlier in the year :)

My eldest DD is taking the entrance exam for Stockport Grammar in Jan 2024 and I'd love to hear from other people of their children's experiences.

In this thread you mentioned high number of applicants last year, but not sure how you found that out? I can't find anything online!

Also, do you know if all children are invited to an interview?

She is an intelligent child, but struggles in exam situations so we're not sure if she's going to pass. But we know she'd do really well at interview!

Thank you in advance, from a v stressed mum ;-)

ThirstyMeeples · 19/12/2023 10:54

Hiya, I can't remember how we found out about the number of applications. I think other parents on the day seemed to know and I know one of the teachers who mentioned it.
If she's bright, I'm sure she'll be fine. Has she done practice papers? I think just doing some under exam conditions would be good practice.
I think lots, if not all, of the children get an interview. Unless they've done terribly in the exam.
I also stressed about it last year but he was fine as were all the other kids we know who took it.
Good luck!

MushPeas · 19/12/2023 11:06

Hi @ThirstyMeeples thanks so much for replying :)

She has tried a few practice papers (English comp and VR) and scores about 65%-75%, which is lower than when we're just sitting at home working through the practice questions individually. She panics and doesn't read things properly, so makes mistakes. Will work on this over the next few weeks.

Thanks for the good luck! Will be positive and start to think about what might happen in the interview. More research to do ;-)

Hope your DS is enjoying their school :)

ThirstyMeeples · 19/12/2023 12:08

What about getting her a tutor even for a couple of sessions? It might increase her confidence and they are very experienced with exam techniques.
Remember lots and lots of kids of this age struggle with exams and working under pressure so she won't be at all on her own with that.

MushPeas · 19/12/2023 12:56

I'll reach out to a few tutors and see if they can squeeze us in over the Christmas break. Thank you @ThirstyMeeples :)
