Eton list test

My DS has been invited for stage 2 at Eton. The Eton list test seems to be a mystery when I try to read up on this. Some say it is something that no student can prepare for. Does anyone have any words of wisdom on what to do for this over the next 2 months ?Thanks

Some Received an email Friday 5th with positive outcome others still not heard by Sunday 7th so not sure if those still waiting will be offers, declined or waitlisted……

LM9 · 07/05/2023 17:10

Maybe definite Yes came earlier on Friday and screening the others?

Underthelavender · 07/05/2023 17:39

DS received an offer on Friday, we are unsure if we will accept.

LM9 · 07/05/2023 18:23

Congratulations for the good news, may I ask why you are unsure ? Any better options maybe?

Underthelavender · 07/05/2023 18:33

Thank you @LM9 DS has a place for September ( Year 7) at Queen Elizabeth Barnet so he will definitely start there. We also have a place at Winchester, we were initially thinking of seeing how it goes and then switching to boarding in Year 9. QEB is a great school and it might be madness to give up the place.

Because I started this thread , and because I gained so much support from reading replies, I thought I would write about our experience now that we are on the other side of it.
For stage 1 , DS used atom - he said the questions on atom seemed harder than the actual iseb exam at times … especially for NVR.
for stage 2 , I don’t think anything we did would have made much difference. DS continued reading and playing sport and we spent some time playing logic games. He had one session of interview run through in school. I would sometimes ask him a random philosophical type question just so he could think of an answer on his feet.
Stage 2 day - made sure he was relaxed and had a treat to look forward to at the end of it ( movie outing ). It was the last exam day for him so he was ready for it to be over.
we listened to a funny audible book on the way to the exam. He was relaxed when he went in.. he forgot to bring a book to read with him but he said the admissions team had some board and card games available in the gap.
he can’t remember much of the list test … except it was nothing like atom .
he said interview was relaxed and on the whole, he enjoyed the day. Hope this helps x

Thanks all for sharing your experiences.

Our DA didn’t give as much feedback on the test apart from the fact that it was harder than Stage 1 ISEB. He participated in some group activities and also had an interview with one of the teachers / housemasters (he couldn’t tell).

We are still waiting for feedback on Tranche 4 tests. For those who have beard back in the previous tranches, what day of the week did they contact you and is it by email or phone? Eton did email us a few weeks ago that the results will be sent to the school and us this week but so far nothing yet.

Roses81 · 28/06/2023 21:09

DS was in tranche 2 … wow didn’t realise there were 4 tranches ! Somehow thought it just 3…
email said “ expect result week beginning x… literally got the email at the very end of the week ..Friday at 4pm.

Thanks @Roses81. I’ll wait till Friday then. It feels so long away. Yes there are 4 tranches so we attended in April

  • Early Group - assessed early January
  • Birthdays between September and the first half of December: your child will be assessed in late January or early February. This is known as Tranche 1.
  • Birthdays between the second half of December and March: your child will be assessed in late February or early March. This is known as Tranche 2.
  • Birthdays between April and August:your child will be assessed in late April or early May. This is known as Tranche 3.

It will probably be at the end of the day tomorrow that you hear back.
Try to distract yourself as much as you can. It’s very fatiguing and I wish I hadn’t refreshed the screen so many times. Wishing you the best to hear the news you are anticipating.

Thanks @Roses81. Yes we got an email Friday as you predicted. Not the results we were hoping for but now our sights turn to options 2 & 3.

Blessed4ever · 13/12/2023 21:31

@Roses81 That's really a great news. My son has been invited for a trance 1 exam next January/February. Thanks for sharing your experience. I wonder what sort of psychological questions helped. Do you think buying IQ books will help in any way?

Hi @Roses81 @Watermelonsalad

One year on from your old thread about stage 2/Eton List Test and I am in the same position you were last year: my DS will have his stage 2 assessment in February. Seeing as you guys went through it and came out successfully, do you have any advice you would be willing to share? Thanks so much. 🙏

Roses81 · 14/12/2023 05:30

Hi congratulations !
I have a summary above on things that we did to prepare for the eton list test. DS says no one thing we did really helped but just being calm about the process helps in the long run. Usual interview reminders - eye contact , speak clearly etc.
philosophical questions - I used to ask random things like … is it even right to lie ? But he didn’t get asked any such thing in the actual interview.

Thank you @Roses81 so much. It is exciting and nerve wracking for him (and me!). Just trust the process I guess! X

Nothing! You can't prepare for it. Just have a good night's sleep beforehand and a good breakfast.
