Cardinal Vaughan Memorial school - Music aptitude test and Banding test

Hi,
Anyone have any idea of what the Music Aptitude test for CVMS involves? Are they expected to perform on their instrument? If yes, How many pieces? Or it it more like Aural tests. Also, is the banding test verbal and Non verbal reasoning or does it include English and Maths as well.

Would be interested to hear from anyone who has taken the test before. Or anyone currently a Music scholar there. Thanks

I heard is maths - verbal reasoning and non verbal reasoning . Are you also going on 31st?

It's English and Maths. I'm not aware of there being any verbal and NVR. Good luck on Monday.

Surely it would be unfair for a a music 'aptitude' test to require playing of pieces on an instrument? What if kids have aptitude but haven't had opportunity?

To be fair, surely it should be stuff like repeating rhythms, or recognising changes in pitch or something?

(Absolutely no knowledge of the test or the school though!).

School Admissions Code para 1.32:

Admission authorities must:
a) ensure that tests for aptitude in a particular subject are designed to test only for aptitude in the subject concerned, and not for ability;

So if it is only 'aptitude' on which the school states it selects - the MAT, yes; Show us how nicely you play your Grade 6 pieces, probably not. In theory, anyway...

Can you give me the details of the testing and which grades your son's joined please.

Did you sit the banding exams? My son would be applying this year and It’ll be nice to know from other parents, who’ve gone through the process, what does the entrance test really include? Would be much appreciated. Thanks.
