Harrow: Whitmore High School and Nower Hill High School

Dear mums
I'm be moving to Harrow from overseas and trying to get more info about these schools. It will affect which area I should move to. I couldn't find more info. All I know is Nower Hill is very packed and outdoor area is not very spacious. Whitmore has relatively new and modern building.

I would focus on behaviour and achievement in any schools, especially Government ('state') schools. Many such schools have minimal outdoor areas. Some have no playing fields at all.

In the London Borough of Harrow, Nower Hill is the most highly regarded state school.

Thanks for your reply! Yes I also regard behaviors highly. So in the other word, you think Nower Hill student behaviors is better than Whitmore? But then as I heard Nower Hill has minimal outdoor spaces. Would appreciate you can share any insight, thanks again

Is this a move in time to.make an on time application for year 7 (that is, for 2023 entry or later)? Or a mid-year application? If the latter, it will be a question of which school has a space to offer, although living closer to a particular school will usually put you higher up the waiting list if a place becomes available.

It's an on time application. My daughter is going to be year 5 this year and we are planning ahead. 😊

Both are very good and very popular schools.

Nower Hill is a little bigger (numbers).

There is outdoors space - tennis/netball courts, extension field, playground, outdoor seating around the building - not sure how spacious but there is outdoors space. I don't know about Whitmore.

Both do GCSE over 3 years. Have a look at the what;s offered as this may impact on your choice too. For example Nower Hill does Latin and Classics and I don't think that Whitmore does.

What kind of qualities are you keen on?

Thanks for your suggestion to look at what subject to offer for GCSE. Both school's academic results are quite similar. I'd be looking for a school which has good pastoral care, support for both mental and academic if needed. Teaching should be inspiring for student to be keen to learn. Sound like too perfect 😂

By the way, Whitmore is a community school whereas Nower Hill is an academy which should have more autonomy. Not sure if an academy is necessary better than a community school...

I spoke the the headmistress of Nower Hill a few weeks ago. She was delighted as they have no staff Vacancies at all next year and is really happy with the people she has hired. So many schools are struggling for staff so this says a lot about the calibre of the school.

I have experience of NH and I have nothing but good things to say about it, both academically and pastorally. However I also hear good stuff about Whitmore so it’s a nice situation to a choose between.

I live in Harrow agree, don’t think you can go wrong with either. Have you also considered Pinner High? It’s in the same area and a newer school but again very good but smaller than the other two - so some parents prefer this if it suits their DCs more. As it’s smaller the catchment is smaller though.

Agree Pinner High is definitely a school with a great rep. As it’s is a fairly new school, the curriculum on offer is still fairly narrow, but that’s something that I’m sure will expand as time goes on. They are quite progressive though, with Mandarin and Spanish as their compulsory languages.
