Hi all, I posted something similar in a house thread but understandably not much traffic there about this topic so wanted to try here. We are moving to York area and I am trying to find info about Malton secondary or Ryedale secondary. Malton in particular is the perfect location for us but I have heard a few mixed reviews about the school and would really appreciate anyone’s experience of having a child go there, or know of one and what their experience was regarding things like friendliness, bullying, drugs, just generally a sense of the school from a kids point of view. Also just generally about Malton would be great as well if poss. We are also considering Ryedale so the same for there as well would be fab. I know many of the schools in York are fantastic, we just would rather not live in or very near York unless they are the only decent options school-wise. Would love to be near the Moors. That said, any opinions on easingwold as well would be great.

Thanks!

We went Independent rather than Easingwold. Ryedale was too far away.
Don’t know anything about Malton, but would pick Ryedale over Easingwold.

Ah thanks thats interesting to know. I saw that Easingwolds last Ofsted wasnt great. Do you know what Ryedale is meant to be like? I know it doesnt have a post-16 so thats a consideration.

Off up to have a look all around the area next week.

I know quite a few kids who take the train to York to go to secondary school due to Easingwold and Malton not being good enough. But how good or not they may be I guess it is a matter of personal preference.

Almost all of York’s secondary schools are classed as Very Good or Outstanding by Ofsted, so that may have a bearing as well.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 22/08/2021 12:00

A lot of the kids getting the train to York for school are either private or All Saints which is the Catholic comprehensive. There are also people coming to Malton by train from Scarborough and the opposite direction, from York, so go figure.

GrandmasCat · 22/08/2021 17:44

I would add to that Millthorpe and Fulford (and plenty going to St Peters as well).

I took DS all the way to Pocklington when young but we just did it because we loved the school (private).
were people driving to the school from as far as Harrogate and Hull.

Interestingly, I did really miss the commute when DS moved to a more local school, we had such nice conversations in the car when we were at it.

Op hasn’t said she is looking for private though so telling her how lovely the private schools are is worse than unhelpful.

GrandmasCat · 22/08/2021 18:03

She hasn’t said either she is fully discounting them.

Chip on your shoulder? I was just suggesting that the commute is not that bad.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 22/08/2021 18:13

I think the op was pretty clear about what schools she was asking about…

GrandmasCat · 22/08/2021 18:15

So? Many if us have sent kids to schools we never thought about after we learnt more about the different options.

But I leave you to it. Smile

Easingwold is a good school now. The bad Ofsted a few years ago triggered academisation which has massively improved results and behaviour. The Academy Trust has invested a lot of money into the previously run down buildings and continues to do so. I happily sent my children there and they continued to the Sixth Form which has some of the best results in North Yorkshire. Easingwold and the surrounding villages are lovely but quite pricey at the moment.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 22/08/2021 18:18

Op any reason why you haven’t mentioned Lady Lumley’s at Pickering?

bridgetjonesmassivepants · 22/08/2021 18:33

Possibly because of the horrendous Ofsted and the bullying issues?

bridgetjonesmassivepants · 22/08/2021 18:47

Depends how many years you have got before your kids get into secondary though. The teaching at Lady Lumley's is good as are their exam results, give it a couple of years and they should have corrected the pastoral issues.

My daughter came from Norton college to Ryedale as it's believed by the school that's it's the best in Ryedale.
I have had quite the opposite experience since moving here with Lack of communication from the school in incidents and punishment I can not understand , phone stolen money stolen apparently this has never happened as they have no cameras etc ... has a very primary school feel to it even way they eat there dinner would go to Malton for definite if had the chance was in the wrong catchment area
