NVQs in secondary school

has anyone got any thoughts on NVQs in secondary school? My yr 9 son had a talk on options for yr 10/11 today & came home babbling excitedly about being able to do NVQ motorcycle mechanics and spend a day a week at the local college. I am feeling a bit about this & thinking it might be the easy option for those not able to apply themselves to more academic work, i.e. gcses. And - hope to god it won't come anywhere near this - but would they be allowed to study for what ever they choose, even if parents disagree? Thanks

Usually form tutors and mentors will advise students well and steer them away from courses which are inappropriate for them.

I hope so - he seems dead set on it tonight, though things can change fast around here ...

You may not have anything to worry about. In my dc's school you are given a pathway to follow. If school thinks you are capable of getting x amount of gcse's, there will not be any nvq courses in your pathway.
