SundayTimes Top 100 League Table

I wonder why today's table for top 100 secondaries - state and private merged is not on line. Anyway it's interesting in general. 18 state schools in the top 100 and my older children's old schools at I think placed 2, 12 and 18. I think 5 year averages are fairer. No state school in the top 20.

Interesting article says that although some state schools do get good A level results although they're completely eclipsed by the private schools who only educate 7% of children, they aren't as good at getting into university and that perhaps the reason is the schools don't educate broadly and roundly beyond cramming for exams.

MrsGuy - I know, in the provinces its like that. But in Paris 1/3 of children now go to private schools, which are increasingly oversubscribed, and there is a big divide ie once you have opted out of the state system, it is loathe to take your child back when it comes to the all important lycée.

And as for le prix au mètre carré... let's not go there

Hey, Twinset, I was conceived at SMH!

Dad was deputy head, in case you were looking for salacious gossip! Then he went to Windsor to be deputy at St John's and I was born there.

Brother, dad, uncles and grandfather all went to Hodder (which I think is now party of SMH) and SH.

xenia - sorry to join this late, but as a teacher who has worked in both sectors, league tables don't do justice to anyone.

In the state sector, results are so dependent on catchment. The value added figure is a better guide. But so many schools are now just looking to make all their D grade children get C grades. Everyone else gets left behind.

In the private sector, the school I worked in taught International GCSE which isn't recognised and so isn't reflected in the tables. We had brilliant results that used to score a big, fat zero in the league tables.

All league tables should be banned.

i don't see the point in league tables, surely the results tell you more about how clever the kids are in the catchment than how good the school is?

You scared me then Smartarse as one of the reasons we are moving away from this town is the shocking number of teenage preganancies. You then come on and say I was concieved at a prep school!

Hodder house is the pre prep section.

Do you have any salacious gossip to share?

SmartArse · 27/11/2007 10:13

Sadly not, Twinset, being only a babe at the time! We happened to be in the area last year and took the DDs to see SH. DD1 said it reminded her of the Dark Satanic Mills!
