@Shimy thanks, he is doing economics, psychology and English Language.
He did say his predicted grades he will be given will be based on his results from previous exams sat during year 12 too so maybe they have just spilt the content up

icanbewhatiwant · 14/06/2021 17:14

@Zandathepanda ds3 was only 3 when diagnosed. He was having 2 or 3 seizures every hour, but not a full on seizure, his arms would shoot out to the sides and his head would turn to one side, then a minute or so later he'd be back. But within 2 weeks of medication they stopped. He came off meds age 9. I have been told they could return, puberty being a time they often return. But no way of knowing. He won't be having the big hit of vaccines they have around year 11 in one go. I'll get them done as separately as I can. I expect we will have to pay. Ds can't remember them. It must be a lot more distressing for your dd being older.

Ds2 has finally been given his mock exam timetable. Exams start next week and run for 2 weeks. Apparently they don't need to be in school when there aren't exams. So now I need to persuade dh to take and collect him when I am working.

The driving instructor has cancelled ds's lesson again today. I think that is the 7th one he's cancelled since 12th April 😡 he thinks he has sun stroke. 2 weeks ago he had an upset tummy. The week before the windscreen wiper broke. The other times it has been driving tests at the last minute. But it's getting silly now the amount being cancelled.

ealingwestmum · 14/06/2021 17:21

Wow Ican; is this the novice/newly qualified instructor? How does he expect to build a business without quality referrals? Not helpful I know, sorry, but I’m pissed off for you!

Piggywaspushed · 14/06/2021 17:40

DS finished most exams apart from special extra one in economics this week! Just as a treat!

Sociology teacher told him he came top across two classes so that's nice.

That driving instructor sounds like DS's former guitar teacher.

Shimy · 14/06/2021 18:24

Fiddler That makes sense. These are the first set of exams DS has done although there have been block tests.

ican That driving instructor sounds hopeless. Reminds me of my first driving instructor who always used to cancel, as he had to visit his girlfriend up in BirminghamHmm. Have you paid them for block tests or just pay as you go?

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 14/06/2021 18:46

ican if you can find a new instructor then I would. I remember getting a tutor for DS who did the same thing - her car 'broke down' several times (despite being about two years old), she wasn't well, her dog wasn't well, dog had to go the groomers and that was the only time they could do and on and on. By the time she had cancelled more times than she had come we parted ways!! It made the times she came useless.

icanbewhatiwant · 14/06/2021 18:48

Yes...the trainee driving instructor. Luckily he's had a cancellation tomorrow afternoon. As long as he's not still poorly Ds will take that. But other times there's been no other slots. I'm so glad I've booked a few lessons with another instructor in Norwich. Ds said the Norwich chap was much better at explaining. But it's hard to get a lesson as it's 40 mins to Norwich. So can't really go until 4.30pm onwards. Or weekends. We have two more booked with him. I think I'll get a few more booked July once Ds has finished school. We are using ds1's student house as base, but he will be home by then. So I'll just have to hang about for 2 hours. Ds will be paying rent over the summer, so no reason I can't park on his driveway.

I am a bit annoyed with the instructor. But then I thought maybe I shouldn't be if he's ill. But 7 cancellations is quite a lot.

icanbewhatiwant · 14/06/2021 18:50

@JustHereWithMyPopcorn it was a nightmare getting an instructor. The original one I booked in august for November lessons dropped us. The only available was this one. I tried lots. Though I recently tried someone in Norwich as I said just now. I wish I'd thought of that sooner. It's a faff having to take Ds 40 min drive first though.

Zandathepanda · 14/06/2021 18:57

Ican we changed driving instructor for oldest Dd after ours kept changing cars. It worked well but these were in the days before covid chaos. Dd won’t be able to learn to drive until free of seizures for 2 years. Sad. The sweetheart ordered a disabled bus pass for herself the other day. She is desperate to have some freedom.

The good news from older Uni Dd is that lateral flow tests are picking up positives. The bad news it that it is spreading like wildfire so quickly. She is surrounded by covid positive households and is isolating feeling like a sitting duck. She was due home today. It’s going to be a nightmare if this variant hits DD’s school (over a 1000 mixing, no masks, no bubbles).

whatsnext2 · 14/06/2021 19:48

Place marking as I keep losing this thread!

icanbewhatiwant · 14/06/2021 19:49

@Zandathepanda yes...my dad had epilepsy. He never drove. It was 10 years seizure free back in the day.

I was worried about ds1 at university as he meets up with dh every 2 weeks for clay pigeon shooting. But cases in Norwich are still very low. It'll be great when his age group get a vaccine.

Oblomov21 · 14/06/2021 20:15

ican that driving instructor sounds crap!

AnneOfCleavage · 14/06/2021 20:40

That is really crap of him ican - is he with a Franchised firm? If so surely they wouldn't want their name sullied.

In other topics, was I the only one to hear Boris say restrictions in place til July 19th then a few sentences later he said July 29th then back to July 19th? I'm assuming July 19th as that date is what is written down on the BBC website but I rewound him to see if I was being thick and he definitely said July 29th.

Zandathepanda · 14/06/2021 20:45

Dd said he kept making mistakes in his speech - you didn’t hear wrong. She said he also said company instead of country. He said Monday the 29th July which doesn’t exist.

Zandathepanda · 14/06/2021 20:46

I told Dd to report back as I couldn’t bear hearing him!

Piggywaspushed · 14/06/2021 20:47

He just bumbles. I end up shouting at him.

icanbewhatiwant · 14/06/2021 20:59

@AnneOfCleavage yes the instructor is with a franchise. Learner instructors aren't allowed to go it alone until the third (and final) exam is completed. Maybe I'm being harsh. I don't know.

icanbewhatiwant · 14/06/2021 21:21

I meant to say they are still wearing masks at our school. They wear them in the corridors, they can take them off outside and when sitting at their desks. They said some dc's still wear them in lessons.

A good idea I guess...but hot.

Piggywaspushed · 14/06/2021 21:28

We have masks. Today was a struggle for sure.

We are getting mobile testing units at my school this week. Everyone to be proper PCR tested.

Zandathepanda · 15/06/2021 00:35

Piggy wow the whole school PCRed! That may throw up some interesting results. It will be reassuring for staff hopefully. Happily none of the many Uni students my Dd knows have bad symptoms, some none at all. I was quite impressed the lateral flow tests actually worked on them.

Fiddlersgreen · 15/06/2021 06:48

We’ve just had PCRs done at work (hospital) as it’s a surge testing area. I don’t know if we’ll be told the figures but would be quite interested to know. Me and my close colleagues have come back negative

crazycrofter · 15/06/2021 07:09

Ds is back at school after another false positive LFT in his year. Rumour has it that boys are faking positive LFTs to get themselves and their friends a day or two off school!

AndwhenyougetthereFoffsomemore · 15/06/2021 07:26

@JustHereWithMyPopcorn: it's a total of 7 1/4 hours of exams over the day, so reasonably full on, but shorter than yours at least!! Todays' the day, and he seems (surprisingly) pragmatic about it! Good luck with the PCR testing @Piggywaspushed: will be interested to hear what comes back given that PCR is much more sensitive (but can also show up historical infections as I understand)

Monkey2001 · 15/06/2021 08:06

Ican that instructor sounds decidedly dodgy! When you are paying so much, I would expect them to offer you an alternative when they cancel. We are so lucky that a friend is teaching both ours to drive - just 8 hours with a professional instructor local to the test centre arranged for DS1 for topping and tailing, but even that is £240 (paying £30/hr in Bodmin). I think I read somewhere that the average is 40 hours of lessons, so an eye-watering £1,200 before you have paid for tests, theory apps, get-a-sensible-date apps.

@AnneOfCleavage I also noticed the Monday 29th July bit - made a note of it as my DSs are both planning to go to a festival 23rd to 25th July, so 19th leaves a small chance that it might go ahead but 26th would mean no festival. I know Boris must be intelligent as he went to Oxford and got a scholarship, although Classics is not as competitive as some subjects, but he does seem like a bumbling idiot. None of the panel answered the question about whether they see a need to give the second vaccination to students before they go back to university. Lots of universities are already offering vaccines (including the Welsh ones and St Andrews), but DS1 has come home and it is too far to go back just for a vaccine.

AnneOfCleavage · 15/06/2021 08:13

Zanda and Piggy such a bumbler yes. My DH said he'd said the other day we'd be giving out 100 billlion of vaccines to other Countries instead of 100 million. Missed him saying Monday 29th as that would have clicked as we've got something planned for that day so it's imprinted which was why we were panicking a bit. I just heard 29th.

ican ah yes of course. Can you get another instructor with this same franchise or is it better to find a completely new one? So frustrating for you both.
