I know that we would have to get a place before it would be possible to apply for a Maths scholarship, but I wanted to get a little more information on what they are like, and in particular what they might be like for a girl. I am clearly not sure if my DD would get one, but I do know that she is very able at maths. Unfortunately, she has also spent the last 4 years at primary school twiddling her thumbs, and bored out of her mind in maths lessons. She is extremely good at mental maths, and unfortunately has gotten to a place where she is used to knowing the answer with little thought, and if she has to think gives up quickly. As a result, she is very able and very turned off maths. I guess my question is would the maths scholarships fun? How do the other kids see the kids on the maths scholarships (she doesn't like to stand out)? Does it impact on other areas of learning? What sort of level do kids need to be working at to stand a chance of getting one? And what is the ratio of girls/to boys? Would a maths scholarship mean that kids were encouraged towards sciences? My DD loves English, and whilst she may discover a love of science, I would rather her be inspired by maths and then able to choose what she wants to do! I would be grateful to hear any experiences or information. Thanks!
