DS is very keen on a career in STEM and was given a leaflet about the Nuffield placements which are right up his street. However, he doesn't qualify as he's not from a low income family, DH and I are both graduates, he's never qualified for free school meals and hasn't been in care.

Are there any other similar schemes anyone knows about? SOmething offering a few weeks work experience for 16/17 year olds?

It's difficult to find extended work experience in labs for under 18s (unless through a sponsored scheme).

Luckily universities realise how difficult it is for under 18s to access laboratory work experience, so their admissions departments don't expect applicants to have done any.

If he is interested in Maths, Physics or Chemistry, the Isaac Physics website has lots of fun problems to solve for this age group, and they run a free mentoring scheme which is open to anyone in Y12 who goes to school in the UK. Through this, DS2 has been offered a free place at a residential summer school on quantum mechanics, which includes laboratory sessions.

Smallpeice Trust often run STEM events and summer schools, so have a look at their website.
