How do I apply for local authority state secondary but one grammar in different county.

DD will be starting secondary in Sept 2020. She fancies trying her hand at the 11+ for a grammar school in the next county, Berkshire.

But I'll also need to apply for state secondaries in our county, Hampshire.

I have no idea what I need to do. Do I need to put the Berks grammar on our local authorities secondary application form when I apply this autumn? So I'd have the grammar as preference 1 and pick two Hampshire secondaries for preferences 2 and 3 .

Obviously I will ask Hampshire this too but I trust MN for sensible advice first .

I'll need to apply to Berkshire for the grammar and Hampshire for our usual three secondary choices. So I'll have four choices .

We had a common application form. Six choices in total (London). You made one application to your “home” borough and they liaised with the neighbouring ones.

The process is the same everywhere. You cannot apply direct to Berkshire. They will not accept your application as you don't live there. You were right the first time. You put the Berkshire grammar school on the Hampshire application form. So no, you won't get an additional choice.

You make all your applications via your home borough or county. It is usually done online via a Common Application Form (CAF). The form usually opens around early Sept and you have until end of Oct to submit.

You need to register for grammar tests which is separate from the school application process and some have closing dates imminently so do check that if you haven’t already. You should get results before CAF deadline. A pass or good score doesn’t always guarantee a place, check the oversubscription criteria, some grammars have catchments or distance etc.

Some schools require supplementary info forms (SIFs) either at registration for grammar tests or parallel to filling out the Common Application Form.

petts I think I've got the grammar application in hand. Doing it this week, deadline is the 14th. I'm just reading the guidance notes, again.

Check you are eligible for the school rather than going through the process of the exam & finding she would never have got a place anyway. Some have cathcments, some don't. I think at this stage you would just be applying to take the exam, not for the school, that comes later when you have the results (or at least I think so!).

You get the results of the Kendrick test before submitting your school application, you can then use her result to see if she is likely to get a place - the eleven plus forum has got past scores and the cut offs for priority area 1 and 2. You can then make a judgement call about whether it is putting down.
I would check your postcode falls into a priority area as if it doesn’t then you won’t get a place and will have had the stress of the exam for nothing.

Thanks Iona. We're priority area 2. So a long shot but DD seems determined to give it a go.

This will be the first year that Kendrick will be using a 2 tier catchment system, allowing a lower pass score for PP girls and increasing its PAN to 128. So it will be a bit more unpredictable than previous years, but definitely worth a go if your DD is interested and keen. Good luck.

Apply to sit the test now, test in September, results 2 weeks later, Hampshire CAF form to be submitted by the end of October. If you achieve higher than the pass mark, I believe you must put it as your CAF first choice if you want the chance to be allocated a place (subject to rankings and catchments etc.)

You should always put it first if it is your first choice. The school doesn't know where you put it but she will be allocated the one highest up the list she qualifies for.
