Moira House School and dyslexia

I really like Moira House school in Eastbourne and am considering it for my daughter who is currently in Year 6. Can anyone help me decide whether to take on the huge financial sacrifice it would be to send her there. She is severely dyslexic - does anyone have any experience?

If she's very severely dyslexic have you looked at Frewen? Sometimes you can get it funded or part funded under an EHCP

Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately she doesn’t have an EHCP and living in East Sussex I think it would be virtually impossible to get on at this stage though I may be wrong...
I’d love her to go to Frewen but it’s an hour away and I couldn’t find it myself...

If severely dyslexic then things get rapidly harder in secondary. Frewen is fantastic and lots of students have tried and sadly failed elsewhere and often have to regain self-esteem after not coping in mainstream. The big difference is that all the teaching starts from a dyslexic angle - so they come at the whole process slightly differently and all the teachers have qualifications in teaching dyslexia.They run minibuses to pick up day students. Go and see it, my DC has an EHCP so finance not a problem but I would have mortgaged my granny to pay if I'd had to

Thanks so much for your reply. We are going to an open day on Saturday. I’m glad to hear it has worked for your child. What age was he/she when they started there?
I started the statutory assessment ball rolling today and have a SEN advocate but I know it will take months. Thinking of taking her out of current school ASAP and sending her to a school that has much more dyslexia support while I wait for outcome of Frewen application. I’m desperate for her to regain some of her self esteem. The other school is independent and will be a massive struggle to finance. But as you say, I’d do anything to help her.
Frewen is an hour away.

Wondering if anyone else out there has experience of Moira House?

My daughter is at Roedean Moira House. As you are probably aware Roedean basically took the school over A year ago but officially rebranded this year.
I’m sorry that I’m not much help as my daughter is not dyslexic but with most private schools, 1:1 dyslexia help, DST’s etc are all an extra cost and can often price some families out of private education.
Have you been and had a look around the school and spoken to the new head, Mr Wood? I’m sure they would be able to give you an idea of what help is provided.

Frewen College in Northiam is the specialist Dyslexia school. It is very expensive but do offer generous bursaries. My friends son went to Bedes which was known to be very good with its own dyslexia unit.
RMH is a wonderful school. Sorry I can’t be of any further help though.

Thank you for this. I am very impressed with what MHR has to offer and seriously considering it. I liked Mr Wood and the Art department.

I know all the schools mentioned above and have experience of two of them. My first choice would be Bedes. They are brilliant with dyslexic children.

I have just been looking through the Good Schools Guide for Roedean Moira House and seen this.
No extra fees for 1:1 sessions with the school SENCo from Sept 2018.

What did you think of Frewen?
My daughter is v happy at RMH. Have the school mentioned rock pools day to your daughter? It’s great fun.

We managed to sort out my DD's echp in about 6 weeks, it helped I suspect that her school is private but she needed it for a levels (extra time) her previous school didn't apply for extra time and had let her education plan lapse saying eligibility had changed (she was diagnosed dyslexic at 6).

Thank you , she really enjoyed her second taster day! I decided against Frewen in the end as it is too far and MH seems to have everything covered, I am so impressed with their whole school approach to Dyslexia

I am thinking of using John Mckeown to assess my daughter at her current school.
Does anyone recommend him or if not could advise of someone in East Sussex or nearby instead?
