Evidence supporting mixed ability sets in secondary school

I was wondering if there is any evidence to support having mixed ability sets in secondary school.

I know it works in primary but generally that is because they sit around tables and the more able help the ones struggling therefore boosting the more able childs skills and supporting the less able.

But how does this work in secondary as they sit on tables of two?

What happens when the work is not challenging children?

I had this same question last night after an Open Morning meeting at my DC school. I have been kindly given some information and reading on the thread I started called 'Setting in Maths in Year 7' which may help you.
