Hi My daughter is starting secondary school next week and I’ve just logged into the school app and she is down as Sen support-k. Does anyone know what this means? Will she have extra help in certain key subjects?
Many thanks

Have you spoken to the school about her needs? There will be information from her primary school and the SATs results and I imagine those will determine whether and what type of support she has.

K means she has special needs that have been identified, and staff should receive information from the SENCO on how best to reach her in class to allow her to reach her potential.

Thank you for answering my question so quickly, do you think the school will get in contact with me to let me know in what areas she will need more help?
Many thanks :)

Hi, her primary school said in April that she would be allowed extra time when she did her sats and she didn’t pass two of them. I never knew there was any issue before that school reports always said she was doing ok. I will get in contact with the senco when school opens next week to see what and where she needs help.

K just means she’s on the SEN register-speak to the senco when term starts. I presume you already knew this from the primary school?

No the only thing ever mentioned to me was we are giving her a little extra time with her sats no mention of any struggles at all . She was really happy to do her sats and thought she had done well then her results showed something very different.

Hi there! I work in SEN at a school and of course know that K = SEN Support, but does anyone actually know what the K stands for? We are having a bit of a discussion and no one knows.

I don't think it specifically stands for anything, it's just the government allocated code for "SEN Support", introduced in about 2014 -

assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/274641/RFC_677_-new_data_items-_SEN_support.pdf

You'll see that "Q" there doesn't "stand for" any specific word either.
